What if your final reward grew exponentially with the number of tokens you get? This would encourage people to play on up until the point in which they have all the tokens.
For instance, there are 16 tokens that are all worth 10c initially, but 2 are worth 20c, 3 40c, 4 80c etc and all 16 together are worth $6553.60.

Re:leaving penalties in football matches
I'd just have it so that if you leave a game while holding the football then you lose it to your opponent. And to win the football you have to take all of your opponents coins (or have them leave).

#78 Re: Main Forum » Strategy analysis » 2015-02-21 22:47:36

Up front it decides what moves it would make in any given situation so it doesn't have to recalculate each time a move is made. The moves it takes do take into account the red moves of the opponent.

#79 Re: Main Forum » Strategy analysis » 2015-02-21 00:20:40

Using my method (which I think is optimal) you should win close to 68% of the time (counting draws as not winning).

My method finds the move with the largest expected win rate given that it will also play the moves with the largest expected win rate in the later rounds and a random opponent.

#80 Re: Main Forum » Thoughts on a Launch Contest » 2015-02-20 23:23:10

Hmm, rewarding any of the leaderboard items could be problematic:

ELO gained: If this is going to happen I'm just going to start losing a few 1c games... there is no way I will win this from where I am on the board and it would be easy for me to bounce up from a low ELO.

Profit Ratio: Well, this one encourages stopping playing after a big win and is also extremely open to exploitation. If someone was to stop playing after one win they would have an infinite ratio.

Most games played: Well, this one will surely go to someone who has made a bot, so possibly Clock Form, although to make a bot that just plays starts games and then leaves would be very easy and surely win this (as long as it was the only one doing it).

Most Games Won: is interesting but would probably go to a bot as well as there should hopefully be lots of new inexperienced players who will still regularly lose to a bot. Also, if you have two bots playing each other all of the time one always has to win.

Total profit: Obviously gives a massive advantage to those with a big bankroll.

So... I'm thinking just an extended tournament under your current system would be easiest with some extra money added to the prize pool. It is hard to think of anything as cool as the TCD Steal Real Money comp for this game. You could also possibly add a tournament ELO in which everyone starts the same and then give a prize to whoever is on top at the end.

Using perfect play against a random opponent you will win around 2/3 of the games (I am very certain of this). So a random strat is not a great idea.

In two of my games this morning my opponent left in odd situations. In the first Chin Professor left while I was a small amount ahead. He told me on Chatzy that he got a "game disconnected" screen though says his internet was working fine otherwise. In the second Harness Clemency left early while there was 20 chips on the table.

Claspa said on chatzy that he has had a few leavers while he was up on chips, has anyone else experienced any problems or odd things?

Bump as there are new players about.

Also thought I should mention that with the low number of people using this people should turn notifications on so that they know when people log on/post a message.
You can do this by clicking the little speaker icon in the top right hand corner.

#84 Re: Main Forum » Penalty for leaving » 2015-01-30 09:46:54

It is nice to take a little extra off Jeopardy Alcohol every time they leaves early. It still doesn't stop them from doing it though.

Ok, I have added the steps to get it working into the OP.

Well, you are surprisingly good for a beginner, the way you are able to claw back from almost nothing and end up winning.

#87 Re: Main Forum » The Epic Standoff between Bird Graduation and Railroad Animal » 2015-01-29 12:20:17

That was an intense one! I was sure after I followed your all in that it would end out like our earlier games...

#88 Re: Main Forum » Cordial Minuet Twitter bot » 2015-01-29 12:18:52

It was an odd one considering I hadn't lost any money since it last posted me. I'm not sure how that would happen.

It was a lot of fun Animal. It's sad to see that your now on $0.10 sad. Let me know if you ever need a kick start and I'll lose a few (small) games to you.

JEOPARDY ALCOHOL trumps BIRD GRADUATION for $1.94. JEOPARDY is now at $15.83 profit!

Jere, this didn't happen.
Around this time I actually won a $1 game against someone. I wanted to see who, then this popped up out of nowhere.

#91 Re: Main Forum » Compiling for Windows » 2015-01-29 02:43:52

Yep, that must have been the problem.

Thanks everyone for helping, it is working now.

I'll post some detailed instructions soon of how I got it to work to make it easier for anyone else who has no idea what they are doing.

#92 Re: Main Forum » Compiling for Windows » 2015-01-28 22:05:43

Thanks computermouth!

I downloaded the unix source from the link you posted above and ran runToBuild in it and it worked straight away.

#93 Re: Main Forum » Compiling for Windows » 2015-01-28 12:27:11

Yeah, that is odd as I have them in the same folder and it is obviously finding everything else.

Edit: None of these functions are declared in game.h anyway and I'm not sure where they are declared. I guess I'll try to figure it out in the morning, off to bed now.

#94 Re: Main Forum » Compiling for Windows » 2015-01-28 11:54:03

Ok, figured out my problem was that I had to mount minGW in msys with:
mount c:/mingw /mingw

g++ is now working.

However, I'm getting some new errors:

make3

I don't imagine I would have to modify the code to get it working, right?

#95 Re: Main Forum » Compiling for Windows » 2015-01-28 10:59:21

Thanks ..

I did post the error but I can understand if you missed it in the previous post:

make: *** [Makefile.minorGems_dependencies] Error 127

Here is the rest of the output:

make2

#97 Re: Main Forum » Compiling for Windows » 2015-01-28 02:24:28

Thanks Jason,

I've run the make files and am now getting a string of errors of the form:
Makefile:710: [filename].dep: No such file or directory
this is followed by a long string of ../../minorGems/[filepath]/[filename].cpp ../../minorGems/ etc..
at the end there is the error
make: *** [Makefile.minorGems_dependencies] Error 127

Do you have MSYS installed?
Did you grab the SDL development libraries(not the runtime or source)?
Did you get the source from here?

Yes, as I said I am using MSYS
Yes, I downloaded the minGW devepoment library of SDL and installed it using the instructions iceman linked in his post.
I found the source files on sourceforge, I imagine they are the same.

Has anyone been successful in compiling CM for windows? I've had a go but am a bit lost.

What I have done so far:
- Installed MinGW
- Installed SDL 1.2
(both following Iceman's instructions regarding TCD: http://thecastledoctrine.net/forums/vie … 913#p7913)
- Downloaded the CM source and minorGems placing them in the same folder
- Ran msys.bat, navigated to the CM source directory and ran configure
Now, when I run configure it asks me to "Select Platform"

When I type '3' for "Win32 using MinGW" it just seems to quit and gives no output.

Edit:
Ok, I figured this out and for those wondering here is what to do:

1. Download and install minGW
Follow the instructions here until "After Installing You Should ..."

2. Download and install SDL1.2 for MinGW
Follow the instructions here.

3. Download the CW Unix Source
You can find it  here (it's the last one)
Unzip the folder somewhere.

4. Run mysis (it will be in your minGW folder, eg.  C:\MinGW\msys\1.0\msys.bat )

Mount minGW into mysys by typing:
mount c:/mingw /mingw
(changing the path name as necessary)

Navigate to the folder containing the CW source and type:
runToBuild

Select option 3 - Win32 using minGW.

And at should compile!

How about mousing over the green scores on the right showing you the possible red scores given that final score?

#100 Re: Main Forum » Another test tournament » 2015-01-13 21:23:38

I think the tournament style as it is is interesting and am not saying that you shouldn't have them. I was just thinking it would be nice also to have tournaments that you win/lose depending on how good you are at the actual game and not the metagame. I also think it would provide more interesting challenges for players and be less about the luck of who you are matched with.
