Re: Feedback on final AMULET CONTEST PAGE

I just realised that players may have preference of an $80 prize (from gold days) over certain copper amulets - this leads to a possible 33 days to sort out, assuming people choose gold > silver > copper.

Re: Feedback on final AMULET CONTEST PAGE

Yeah, I guess I'll have to have all the possible winners reply to me with the prizes in order of preference.  Then I can sort it out on my end.

Re: Feedback on final AMULET CONTEST PAGE

Well, I was thinking more theoretically. In reality I imagine it will be pretty to figure out - for instance if the competition ended now all you'd have to do is ask JA if they'd prefer the gold or the copper amulet.

Re: Feedback on final AMULET CONTEST PAGE

I think your idea for the amulets is awesome. I'm really motivated to compete for one. They remind me of the old activision patches a little. Physical rewards for video games seem like such a cool idea, one thing that could be worth considering is maintaining the cabal and finding a way to more easily mass produce something similar to give away on a weekly basis.

I didn't know about those patches... that's really cool!

Metal coins and such can be reproduced pretty easily and cheaply.  Hmm...

Dollar bills with sigils drawn on them.
(Because it would be too funny to mail people cash)

I'm especially amused that there were patches for Space Shuttle for the 2600; just like the real thing! That game was apparently an achievement of realism at the time.

Yeah, I do have all those special stamped dollar bills from the PAX booth.  They are very cool looking.

Maybe the player who win/won an amulet can get one of these too.

Re: Feedback on final AMULET CONTEST PAGE

One question that I don't think has been answered:

What happens in the event of a draw on the leaderboards?

Re: Feedback on final AMULET CONTEST PAGE

I think they are assigned places in some arbitrary database order... maybe the oldest account first.

If the tie is for an amulet, we're in real trouble.

If it's for a cash prize, I will simply pay both people that amount.

Re: Feedback on final AMULET CONTEST PAGE

Well, luckily there were no draws, but I find myself in the position of having to make a decision that will determine who gets a gold amulet worth over $700...

Determining who gets each prize should not be too difficult at least - I think it should all be sorted in 3 rounds of choosing.

Re: Feedback on final AMULET CONTEST PAGE

Thank you very much for this contest. It was nerve wrecking, but enjoyable at the same time. The twelve days contest was something I've never experienced before. I played "hard" and put much effort into winning an amulet, I took risks, messed up by sleep rhythm, had failures and success. I am glad to get a reminder of this event.

It's too bad that regarding the player count the launch did not work out... However let me tell you, that I really like this game.

A friend of mine is a professional Go (baduk) player in Korea who should have won an account by Frosty&Jere's give away. We will setup a match within the next time. Go pros are actually quite into various games and combine them with "gambling"like elements, so there is the possibilty to get a certain audience here.

Anyway, thanks again for the contest, this great experience and the game itself.

Re: Feedback on final AMULET CONTEST PAGE

Jason, thank you so much for the contest.

It sure was a crazy time for many of us.
There have been a peculiar sense of community in the chat which I was surprised to miss as soon as the tournament ended.
We were rivals, but shared the common stress for the competition smile

I'm trying to convince minosons to send me back in time to Day 1, to concentrate my efforts on the copper amulets, were I stood more of a chance...
If you are reading this post I was not persuasive enough big_smile

Re: Feedback on final AMULET CONTEST PAGE

I'd like to say thank you as well. I've never gone out of my way for a game as much as I did for this contest, and it's all because I really enjoy CM, its gameplay, theming, and community.

I changed my work schedule to be able to play in the evenings.
I borrowed a laptop from a friend to play at work during lunch and while I was out of town.
I played ALL DAY the first Saturday, and even asked a friend to bring me food so I didn't have waste time driving to the supermarket.
I played sitting in my car, sitting in an airport, and sitting in a hotel room.
I also tried ironically playing once while sitting in the middle of a casino, but no one joined my game before I had to leave for my flight tongue

Anyway, it was fun! I've seen the other thread about the new game mode, which I'll have to try, but I seriously love and am obsessed with CM.
I'm going to start livestreaming and hopefully hosting local CM parties if I can get the whole server thing figured out.

You've made a fantastic game, and I'm glad to be a part of it.

Re: Feedback on final AMULET CONTEST PAGE

Yes, it was a generous and engaging contest and the amulets were marvellous prizes; thanks for all the work put into it and the game.
Alas, I was one of the ones who should have focused more on the copper days.

I also tried ironically playing once while sitting in the middle of a casino, but no one joined my game before I had to leave for my flight

That would have been fantastic.

Cobblestone, I set up a local server for playing around and might be able to help you set one up. In particular Jason hasn't updated the database initialisation for recent changes, so it's necessary to run 3 of the scripts in databaseUpdates (gameType.txt, expGameStats.txt, gameLedgerTimeIndex.txt)

Re: Feedback on final AMULET CONTEST PAGE

I wish I'd been able to focus on a copper day too, but work got in the way. Catface was really the only amulet I had a shot at, and I came soooo close until the end.

I was really hoping I'd get to play in the casino! I didn't have the idea until right before I had to leave, so I couldn't wait too long. I snapped a photo, though. I'll upload it once I'm home!

That would be awesome! I was talking to Jason a few months ago about it, but I got super busy and also felt a little guilty taking up his time while he was preparing for the contest. Also, I'm tech savvy but I feel like I might be the only CM player who isn't a full-fledged programmer. So some of the steps required to set it up made me a little cross-eyed. If you're willing to help walk me through it, that'd be great!

Re: Feedback on final AMULET CONTEST PAGE

I could also just set up a private CM server on a server I have access to and give you admin access - would also be less work for me too - but I'm happy to help set it up regardless. But this was the first time I've ever set up an SQL server so I'm still pretty clueless.

Oh, thanks for the offer! Though the con I was at over the weekend had terrible internet access, so it's made me realize that it would be best if I'm able to set it up in a way where it could be local and offline if neccessary. I'm in no rush, and I'd really appreciate the help.

If you want to send me an email, that'd be great! cobblestone.inducement@gmail.com (yes, I made a CM gmail >_> )

Re: Feedback on final AMULET CONTEST PAGE

Just a big "ditto" (or +1, as the internet would have it now) to what everyone's said so far. The contest was fun in the same way CM is "fun." I changed my sleep schedule to try to catch the peak play hours (which didn't help, of course, in the slightest. If I wasn't flipping the sliders I was clicking on the 10s digit for betting, or clicking "Fold" instead of "Bet").

I didn't end up with an amulet, either. Whenever I started making headway, it seemed like a cabal member would smack me right back down. I ended up going for the minimum that might end up winning me at least some prize. No guts, no glory!

Thank you again for the contest, but at least now when I lose all my coins, I won't have the extra pleasure of hearing an unexpected chime and seeing a heart-sinking "-100" message. wink

I just looked in the source for server.php and I don't think this is true.  The CREATE statements DO have those changes in place...

I realize that I forgot to update the foyer.php links to the v25 bundles.  So maybe that's what you ran into?

If you've noticed something I've failed to notice, please email me about it so I can fix it.

Re: Feedback on final AMULET CONTEST PAGE

Glad you all liked it so much!

I just got back from Vegas and am recovering from 20 hours of live poker over 2 days (and many interesting conversations with pros, etc., about CM).

I'll be doing the prize sorting stuff in earnest very soon.  Thanks for standing by.

Re: Feedback on final AMULET CONTEST PAGE

Hmm, it does indeed create the tables with those fields; you're right that there's nothing wrong. I probably accidentally created the databases with an earlier hg revision before switching to later version.
