Oh, thanks for the offer! Though the con I was at over the weekend had terrible internet access, so it's made me realize that it would be best if I'm able to set it up in a way where it could be local and offline if neccessary. I'm in no rush, and I'd really appreciate the help.

If you want to send me an email, that'd be great! cobblestone.inducement@gmail.com (yes, I made a CM gmail >_> )

I wish I'd been able to focus on a copper day too, but work got in the way. Catface was really the only amulet I had a shot at, and I came soooo close until the end.

I was really hoping I'd get to play in the casino! I didn't have the idea until right before I had to leave, so I couldn't wait too long. I snapped a photo, though. I'll upload it once I'm home!

Cobblestone, I set up a local server for playing around and might be able to help you set one up. In particular Jason hasn't updated the database initialisation for recent changes, so it's necessary to run 3 of the scripts in databaseUpdates (gameType.txt, expGameStats.txt, gameLedgerTimeIndex.txt)

That would be awesome! I was talking to Jason a few months ago about it, but I got super busy and also felt a little guilty taking up his time while he was preparing for the contest. Also, I'm tech savvy but I feel like I might be the only CM player who isn't a full-fledged programmer. So some of the steps required to set it up made me a little cross-eyed. If you're willing to help walk me through it, that'd be great!

I'd like to say thank you as well. I've never gone out of my way for a game as much as I did for this contest, and it's all because I really enjoy CM, its gameplay, theming, and community.

I changed my work schedule to be able to play in the evenings.
I borrowed a laptop from a friend to play at work during lunch and while I was out of town.
I played ALL DAY the first Saturday, and even asked a friend to bring me food so I didn't have waste time driving to the supermarket.
I played sitting in my car, sitting in an airport, and sitting in a hotel room.
I also tried ironically playing once while sitting in the middle of a casino, but no one joined my game before I had to leave for my flight tongue

Anyway, it was fun! I've seen the other thread about the new game mode, which I'll have to try, but I seriously love and am obsessed with CM.
I'm going to start livestreaming and hopefully hosting local CM parties if I can get the whole server thing figured out.

You've made a fantastic game, and I'm glad to be a part of it.

garments infection has told jasonrohrer that garments infection wants to forfeit the catface amulet to cobblestone inducement. jasonrohrer forgot to mention that earlier.

Awesome finds!!!! I totally forgot I meant to look into the whole ForgotTunedDisco thing. I've seen the magic square referred to as the sun square too, and the 6, 31, 111, 666 number sequence fits perfectly.

My guess is what we're heading to is discovering an exact date when one final amulet contest will be... or maybe not!

I'll be streaming sometime in the next few weeks. I've had the same concerns about revealing my strategies as we discussed before, but I think I'd honestly rather get more people interested in the game and do my part in building the community. smile

#82 Re: Main Forum » The Mystery of the Amulets » 2015-05-13 23:53:37

Oh, I hadn't noticed the weights were slightly different. Still though, that amulet is notched as 13, which means it was meant to be last regardless of weight, right?

#83 Re: Main Forum » Fundamental issues that limit critical mass » 2015-05-13 23:39:33

I feel that any strategy needs to be complemented with a balance of intuition and confidence. When I overthink or doubt myself I tend to do worse, which I imagine is probably true for poker too. Of course, new players learning the game are probably lacking in both or maybe they have too much of one and not enough of the other. This only improves by playing.

Maybe going the MMO approach and having an area where only new players can enter would help with player retention? After 20 games (when they move off the provisional ELO chart) a player can't enter that area anymore and are part of the general player population. I know that the stakes act as sort of a matchmaking system, but creating a fence that the sharks can't cross might make new players feel like there's less risk to learning the game.

#84 Re: Main Forum » The Mystery of the Amulets » 2015-05-13 23:30:34

...but why make one gold heavier than the other in the reverse order? Or am I misunderstanding?

#85 Re: Main Forum » The Mystery of the Amulets » 2015-05-13 22:29:22

Oh, good catch! The wax carvings of the gold and silver amulets are roughly the same size as their equivalent coins, so the mystery 11th amulet could be a silver Ophiuchus.
The only issue is that the amulets and their associated zodiacs are all in order, except again for those two last ones and the placement of what we're assuming is Ophiuchus.

From what I found on sidereal astrology, Ophiuchus is Nov-Dec and comes between Scorpio and Sagittarius.

The amulets are currently:

10: Libra
11: ??? (Ophiuchus)
12: Sagittarius
13: Scorpio

when it should be:

10: Libra
11: Scorpio
12: ??? (Ophiuchus)
13: Sagittarius

Then again, this might not mean anything... but given the amount of detail Jason's put in to the amulets and his research, I'm inclined to think the swapped amulet order is intentional.

#86 Re: Main Forum » Account info » 2015-05-13 17:04:47

If your game client at home automatically logs in, then you could go into the game folder and find the account file. It'll have the information in it.

#87 Re: Main Forum » Fundamental issues that limit critical mass » 2015-05-13 15:47:57

Maybe I'm an odd duck, but the occult theme and the back-door-of-the-tavern vibe are actually what got me interested in the game enough to try it. I like the underground feel of the game and the community, but I understand that's difficult to maintain for the longterm health of the game.

#88 Re: Main Forum » Fundamental issues that limit critical mass » 2015-05-13 06:17:34

I could actually see that working on Steam, but I have a few questions: would you allow Steam players to recharge their play money with micro-transactions? Do you think Steam would consider letting players cash out their CM balance into their Steam wallet, so cash is essentially only flowing into Steam?

#89 Re: Main Forum » Bachelor's thesis: Strategies in the game Cordial Minuet » 2015-05-12 16:59:03

Oh! Ok, I didn't see that! I guess it's from before I joined up.

There's some interesting suggestions in there. I guess the only real way to get rid of the board luck element entirely is to do it like all the other ways the game does it -- a simultaneous hidden decision. Then again, that's inelegant and would needlessly complicate the game.

Anyway, I like the random boards. What may seem like a bad board can sometimes be a winning one!

(Edit: Commented before reading the final page, and I see you already talked about this too.)

#90 Re: Main Forum » Jeopardy Alcohol 1000th game Bounty » 2015-05-12 15:41:44

Nice, congrats Josh!! I guess the played games counter increments at the start of the game instead of the end, so it's good you stuck with that match!

Jason, has anyone suggested that JA is your dad? Because I think he's your dad. That's my headcanon at least.

#91 Re: Main Forum » Bachelor's thesis: Strategies in the game Cordial Minuet » 2015-05-12 15:30:12

What do you think of his statement about the randomized boards introducing luck into the game?

#93 Re: Main Forum » The Mystery of the Amulets » 2015-05-12 05:27:14

The amulet code names are elusive so far. I can't find anything about them verbatim.

I was working on this silly theory that each code name was actually comprised of two halves of actual phrases. For example, twoClaws is a combination of twoHorns and uh, curledClaws? The idea I had was with 12 amulets, each code name would connect to two others and they could be arranged into a 12 pointed star, which is a symbol for the creation of the universe, apparently... and that runs completely counter to the theme of the game. So ya, I didn't get very far on that!

I've been looking into the number 12, and there are demons associated with each month, but not all of these specific demons are included. There's also 12 disciples, but again that seems to be the opposite direction.

Then again, there's 12 amulets we see, but the notches indicate there's a missing one. So that seems more likely the direction to head in, since 13 is well... 13.

I'm going to rattle this around in my head, take a long walk in the park, and maybe I'll find a lead somewhere!

Edit:

signs of the zodiac

*facepalms* ...or I could just refresh the page and see someone else came up with a brilliant direction to head in. Thanks shotgun!

Edit, adding this:

1: oceanRam - Capricorn
2: clayStream - Aquarius
3: twistingFish - Pisces
4: curledHorns - Aries
5: bullCalf - Taurus
6: sameFaces - Gemini
7: twoClaws - Cancer
8: toughPelt - Leo
9: wheatFurrow - Virgo
10: justBalance - Libra
11: ???
12: horseMan - Sagittarius
13: burningSting - Scorpio

I'm pretty sure this is the association here. Of course, this means the elusive 13th zodiac is Ophiuchus, the serpent-bearer... according to Wikipedia.

#94 Re: Main Forum » The Mystery of the Amulets » 2015-05-12 01:27:53

I found a website today that goes into a little more detail about the demons represented on the amulets:

MERSILDE can transport thee instantaneously wheresoever may be desired.
CLISTHERET makes day or night about thee at pleasure.
HIEPACTH will bring thee a distant person in an instant.
GULAND can cause all varieties of disease.
HUICTIIGARA occasions sleep and waking in some, and afflicts others with insomnia.
SEGAL causes all manner of prodigies visibly, both natural and supernatural.
SURGAT opens all locks.
Bucon, who has the power to excite hatred and jealousy between the two sexes.
Minoson, who insures winning in all games.

Of course the three gold amulets signify:
The three superior are Lucifer, Beelzebuth and Astaroth. According to the latter, Lucifer is Emperor; Beelzebuth, Prince; and Astaroth, Grand Duke.

Hmm. Solving the mystery on the back might lead to the last amulet somehow. But it's a tough one, and given JA's secrecy, I don't think we'll ever get to see the back of #10

Hm... that would be unfortunate if that amulet was essentially lost. Hopefully there's a way to solve the message if it's incomplete?

#95 Re: Main Forum » Leaving: avoiding the next ante » 2015-05-11 23:24:18

Oh ya, that's definitely clear! I just meant the message would communicate when the server sees the pot as owned or not, but I guess the coin animation already does that. So it's really not a big deal.

#96 Re: Main Forum » I wrote a thing » 2015-05-11 19:54:40

Hey, this is awesome!! Man, I'm slowly getting over my loss adversion (I'm almost comfortable with $1 games!) but $200? I'd be a wreck.

#97 Re: Main Forum » Perfect Score » 2015-05-11 19:35:42

Highest possible score?
Lowest possible opponent score?
All scores sequentially in an diagonal?

THIS IS THE END TIMES.

#98 Re: Main Forum » Leaving: avoiding the next ante » 2015-05-11 19:31:39

Huh, I could've sworn that the coins were already moving when I left, because I didn't want it to think I'd left during the reveal (which takes awhile after an all-in, since it's skipping a betting step). I'm probably misremembering, though. That would've sucked leaving after an all-in and not receive the payout! Yeesh! I'll be less trigger happy in the future.

I do think this might be another argument for changing the wording of the leave message to forfeit. Since I had 0 coins and was all-in, the message said "Pay 0", but with essentially 160 in the pot, the message could read "Forfeit 160", and then once the server sees I've won, it would change back to 6.

#99 Re: Main Forum » Perfect Score » 2015-05-11 15:31:56

I wonder if there's a board where it's possible to get the highest score while also giving your opponent the lowest score? That seems like the next trick.

I was looking at the photos of the amulets, and I noticed that they seem to be notched in sequential order if you were to group the amulets together by type. Except there is no amulet 11, and amulets 12 and 13 are being awarded in reverse order. Odd, right? Also, I was thinking that the holes appear to be very deliberately placed and sized, which makes me wonder if you need to align them somehow to fully decode the message the backs.

Since I don't know much about demonology or the Grimorium Verum, I decided to do a little bit of researching on the amulet's sigils.

Here's a breakdown of what I've learned so far:

Notches: leaderboardName - Amulet, Day (sigil)

1: oceanRam - Copper 1, Day 1 (sigil of Mersilde)
2: clayStream -Copper 2, Day 2 (sigil of Clisthert)
3: twistingFish - Copper 3, Day 6 (sigil of Hicpacth)
4: curledHorns - Copper 4, Day 7 (sigil of Gurland)
5: bullCalf - Copper 5, Day 8 (sigil of Huictiigaras)
6: sameFaces - Silver 1, Day 3 (sigil of Segal)
7: twoClaws - Silver 2, Day 4 (sigil of Surgat)
8: toughPelt - Silver 3, Day 9 (sigil of Bucon)
9: wheatFurrow - Silver 4, Day 10 (sigil of Minson)
10: justBalance - Gold 1, Day 5 (sigil of Beelzebuth)
11: ???
12: horseMan - Gold 3, Day 12 (sigil of Astaroth)
13: burningSting - Gold 2, Day 11 (sigil of Lucifer)

I'll be very interested to find out what's on the back of the amulets.
