Re: Reddit post about amulets

Wow... I knew that creating the amulets was hard work, but I didn't realize just how involved the process was.

Thanks for the behind-the-scenes explanation. I'd been wondering about those "wax trees" in the photos on the contest page.

Re: Reddit post about amulets

Even though I use it daily, I hate reddit. People are such jerks. Submitting stuff without being considered a spammer is incredibly tedious or impossible depending on the sub. People will downvote comments for no reason. People will downvote threads for no reason.

This always makes me feel dejected. The last few days have reminded me that I shouldn't feel so bad. I saw that one of the RPS articles about Cordial Minuet got submitted to /r/gaming. Article about a game by a well known game designer? 60% downvoted. Was it offensive? Spammy? Off topic? Nope. Ugh ugh ugh.

Anyway, nice post.

.., I feel the same about HN. Lots of abuse of the downvote and it's notoriously hard to get anything there off the front page (I submitted two Cordial Minuet articles on Tuesday).

Re: Reddit post about amulets

Nice explanation. I didn't realise that those yellow, white and brown trees were the actual gold, silver and copper amulets. They're unreal.

jere: sounds like why I don't spend time on Reddit. Even on HN downvoting gets misused too much.

Re: Reddit post about amulets

What is HN?

Well, I just posted in the 2+2 forums about CM. http://forumserver.twoplustwo.com

A few hours later, my posts were removed, I was scolded by private message spamming, and an infraction was logged against me.

Even though two people had replied to my thread with interest.

So, reddit ain't so bad, I guess.

Re: Reddit post about amulets

No idea what they said to you, but yeah, 2+2 is very strict about people affiliated with commercial products posting on their site.  In order to do so, you have to sign up as an official advertiser (and with that obviously comes paying them advertising money).

By the way, looking forward to my Ocean Ram amulet wink

Well, then I guess I have to wait for someone else to post on 2+2 about the game.

Hint hint...

Have you heard of MetaFilter? It's a much nicer place than reddit. I've only been to reddit a few times in passing, mostly for high profile AMAs. MetaFilter works differently, allowing everyone to post straight to the font page. Cordial Minuet and Jason's other recent games (Sleep is Death and Castle Doctrine) have been "on the blue" a few times. Jason even showed up in the comments of the post when it was in the news back in September.

Personally I don't feel like MetaFilter is the right venue for posting about the launch contest, so I haven't posted about it there. I just don't have much more to say than "Hey, the game launched", which usually isn't good quality discussion for that site, but as a replacement for redit, it's pretty good.

Edit Edit: Wikipedia says HN is HackerNews

Re: Reddit post about amulets

Yup. It's a popular programming/startup site. In order to really get any traction there you have to get on the "front page" which can only happen if your post on the "new" page (which nobody typically looks at) gets enough votes to knock something else off. If you do though, you're guaranteed on the order of 10k visits and typically some good discussion. 95% of the submissions I post there get no upvotes at all, though I did once get on the front page with a stupid article about fantasy football that I wrote. Weird.

Re: Reddit post about amulets

If there was a new article or some blog post or journalist's impressions, I could probably work up a MetaFilter post based on that.

This is the best launch article about CM, and it's on a site that never covered it before:

Re: Reddit post about amulets

What image?

I wasn't suggesting posting to HN; it's not in scope. I was only comparing Reddit to HN because they're similar (HN was sort of a predecessor to Reddit).

I notice that the contest itself is hardly or not mentioned in most of these articles, which makes me sad. The contest could always be emphasised more. For example if it were obviously stated that there are over US$4000 worth of prizes being handed out then I'd think journalists would mention that fact. They almost seem unaware.

Re: Reddit post about amulets

Sorry if I'm taking this too far off topic, but I disagree. From the guidelines:

On-Topic: Anything that good hackers would find interesting. That includes more than hacking and startups. If you had to reduce it to a sentence, the answer might be: anything that gratifies one's intellectual curiosity.

Off-Topic: Most stories about politics, or crime, or sports, unless they're evidence of some interesting new phenomenon. Videos of pratfalls or disasters, or cute animal pictures. If they'd cover it on TV news, it's probably off-topic.

Games get traction quite often, sometimes even silly ones. I think a unique gambling game that skirts gambling laws through math is PERFECT for HN. It might be argued that there would be less conversion because gamers are not the primary audience on HN. But seriously, mainstream gamers don't seem to be more interested in CM than anyone else.

Re: Reddit post about amulets

I think that's on-topic. Well, you're right. Bad memory on my part - I know games make it to the front page, but I could only remember articles at least partially aimed at game developers (of which there are certainly plenty on HN), including "We released XYZ - here's our story"-type articles. (Obviously I totally forgot about 2048)

What I anticipate is that if someone wrote an article describing their CM bot, or a game-theoretical discussion, it could do very well on HN. "A game played on magic squares as payout matrixes": Good for HN. Anything mentioning Jason Rohrer: Definitely some fans. "Win real gold in this online gambling game": Terrible. "Cordial Minuet uses real money to conduct real occult rituals": Even worse

Re: Reddit post about amulets

dot-dot:

Reddit auto-pulled an image of the wax models from the site that I linked to and had a thumbnail there.  I didn't pick the image... not sure how they decided which image to use.  Probably the first rectangular image on the page.  Now that image seems to be gone.

Re: Reddit post about amulets

I would just post the "new" link and ask for people to take a look like you did with the reddit post.

https://news.ycombinator.com/newest

I, stupidly, immediately upvoted and then remembered you're not supposed to do that. And I guess they check the referrer.

Re: Reddit post about amulets

While we're on the subject of reddit, you may or may not have noticed there is a subreddit dedicated to CM. I keep directing people to the forums for certain questions, but now I'm wondering if it'd be better to direct you to the sub. http://www.reddit.com/r/cordialminuet/

Re: Reddit post about amulets

Well, I posted this to the front page of MetaFilter, hopefully it's well-received there.

edit: ARrrgh, I said twelfth game when it's officially Jason's eleventh. Let's pretend I'm counting that one where you tear up money and I think the math works out.
