Re: Best CM Names?

"pipe arbiter" "oats phantom" "meadow lubricant" "disaster pole" (which is what I call my pencil)
"essence buffoon" "beggar physician" "pep bungalow" "mind hound" "strawberry dummy" "moral rubble"  "flesh weapon" (which is what I call my other pencil)
"position grandmother" "body garden" "kiss anecdote" "sobriety management" (which is what medical marijuana is often for)
"outcome soil" "obediance university" "alcohol tree" "passion peacemaker" "horse proxy" "development refrigerator"
There's enough repeats  to make me think he's not using a complete dictionary, just a clever selection of the dictionary that tends to make interesting combinations.

Re: Best CM Names?

The words were selected from this list of 925 evocative nouns used in cognitive experiments:

http://www.math.yorku.ca/SCS/Online/paivio/

I picked a subset of 666 words.  I think I may have tweaked some of the parameters for selection, maybe favoring more concrete words.... but the truth is, I can't remember if I did that or not.  It may just be a random subset of 666 words from those 925.

Also, this funny thing happened when I inserted the words into the database:

Re: Best CM Names?

There are so many good and funny names I read on the leaderboards that it's hard to choose what to share here in this thread. The one friend I've been able to convince to play Cordial Minuet was given the nickname "hospital student" which is great since he was at one time a student at a hospital.

Here are a few that I think are good: fun dream, butcher mercy, hoof decoration, elephant caterpillar, girl procession, star science, spirit soul, namesake author.

Is it allowed for a person to deposit money using multiple email address to obtain multiple nicknames to play as?

The worst unintentional name might be "Dummy Woman" lol.

Of course mine might be the worst strip club name ever, "Promotion Pole"

Agreed! I intentionally left it out of my list thinking it may be offensive to some or viewed as sexist.

Re: Best CM Names?

You can create multiple accounts.  However, you'll need a separate credit card for each one (each CC # can only be used by one account).

I can't see any harm to the main game from people having more than one account.  There is slight harm done to tournaments, but with the recent tournament structure (entry fee plus limit on how much you can win from one partner repeatedly), the advantage you'd get from multiple accounts is both slight and expensive.

Re: Best CM Names?

This is getting away from the topic, but I take it that a person could play a game on each of their accounts simultaneously?

More CM names I found worth mentioning:

fork pleasure
body skin
onslaught volcano

Yes, but multiple cards would be required. JR's set it so that each card can only be used per one account.

Every generated name is hilarious or memorable in some way... except mine. Vegetable duty. Vegetable duty? Comon sad

Here is a fanfic about Vegetable Duty:

Standing at the end of the lunch line
Hair net, plastic gloves, and oversized apron
Casey draws the ire of the youthful patrons as he slops them cold and damp nutrition
It's a thankless task that people would prefer didn't exist. He does this because he drew
Vegetable Duty

Should we take this to mean that there's a limit of 442890 (666*665) unique users at the moment? Or maybe I'm reading too much into things... :-)

Edit: Now that I think about it it would probably be half of that, since you probably don't want two users whose names are simply swapped versions of the other's (e.g. pancake minnow vs. minnow pancake). So only 221445. Surely such a brilliant game will reach that in no time.

Re: Best CM Names?

Swapped names are permitted.

Currently, it will keep trying for a unique name upon collision ten times before giving up and accepting a name that has a collision.  Thus, duplicate names will start happening before we hit that 442,890 limit.

The point of the names is so that players can compare themselves to other players.  Thus, in a population of hundreds of thousands of players, the names don't need to be unique to enable that (just rare).  You know your own balance, for example.

If we got several hundred thousand players, I'd have other problems beyond just name collisions...

Still, if we got to that point, I might expand that database field so that there's room for some players to have three words instead of two.  Then we'd have 295 million possible names, which should be enough for quite a while.

Re: Best CM Names?

I don't follow. You know your own balance, but you don't know your profit, profit ratio, Elo rating, or anything else, so can't see where you stand if names aren't unique. However if there's more than a thousand users or so then it becomes rather tedious to look yourself up anyway

Re: Best CM Names?

Yeah, there will probably be some kind of search function on the leaderboards eventually.

I was thinking that, if we've got a million players, and there's one other person with your name, you'd probably be able to figure out which one you are on most of the boards.  I mean, it's kind of a mind boggling situation at that point.  How many pages would you need to look through with 100 lines per page?  10,000 pages... who is going to do that?

So, at that point, name collisions are rare enough that you'd probably never see a collision for yourself in practice.  You probably wouldn't be able to find yourself, in practice.  The people at the top of the board would probably know who they were, and there would be a very slim likelihood of name collisions near the top of the board.

The boards and names are mostly there for the top players to be able to say, "Hey, that's me!"  And to give other players something to shoot for.

I'm not the only Jason Rohrer on the internet.  Even IMDB has us mixed up:

http://www.imdb.com/name/nm1827432/

Anyway, it's kindof a bridge to cross later.  For now, 2-word names are better.  If collisions become a big problem, we can add 3-word names.

For a moment, I was thinking, "If only I could go back in a time machine and give the first 666 players 1-word names..."  But 2-word names are really far more evocative and strange.  Bird Graduation....

You could still give 1-word names to the first users where a collision occurs...
they would be the 666 indigo children of cordial minuet! big_smile

Having users with identical names might create some problems also with user created tools, like Canto Delirium. Of course they could be solved somehow, still having unique names seems cleaner.

Re: Best CM Names?

Yeah, I probably should put the three-word code in there NOW instead of waiting until it's a problem.

It could search randomly for a collision-free word-pair 10 times and then resort to a word triplet.

Indeed! :S

The two word names are evocative, but ambiguous ("Lubricant Woods," for example). But something like Nail Grandmother Bosom... Doesn't leave much to the imagination!

BTW, I've just seen someone with possibly the best name ever: Welcome to the game, Quest Emporium! big_smile

With all of the new and returning players, Canto Delirium is just a riot of weird, evocative scenes:

CONVENTION SCARLET overpowers SCARLET COFFEE

REFRIGERATOR EXACTITUDE trumps TWILIGHT IGNORANCE

GARMENTS INFECTION bests FOX REMINDER

MISCONCEPTION BANKER overpowers EXPRESSION BOSOM

RATTLE APPEARANCE beats ECONOMY CLOCK

And my new favourite, HARDWOOD PYTHON (make your own joke here).
