Do the chimes go off (when someone joins or action is needed) even if the window doesn't have focus? I was thinking it did, but just a bit ago, it didn't. But then later, I think it did. Is there anything that would prevent the chimes from going off when the window doesn't have focus? Does it have to be not-minimized? Some other factor I'm not considering?
Obviously, I haven't tested much to see when it does and doesn't -- was hoping someone else would know.

Don't minimize the window while waiting for a game.
But, if the CM window is in the background, it should be OK, and you'll hear the chime when someone joins your game.

The chime only sounds when an action is needed after a period of time has passed (I forget how long). It won't chime if the other player makes a move right away.

I could have swore it also BONG'd when you joined a game.
Try Linux, get free. #!++ (CrunchbangPlusPlus) is a stable distribution based on Debian 8. Keep it fast, keep it pretty.

Sorry, it does when you join a game too. I just meant it doesn't always chime after every action, only ones that have taken awhile.

On some platforms, the game can tell when it's minimized and pauses itself to reduce framerate and save CPU.
When paused, it doesn't respond to any events until unpaused, I think. So, that may prevent the chime from sounding. You can experiment with it by intentionally pausing it (ESC).
For example, the REFRESH button on the main page waits 5 seconds before appearing. If you pause it in the middle it won't appear until unpaused.

Well, the main thing is obviously when someone joins a game I started. There's been at least once or twice where it hasn't chimed then. But yeah, I may have had the window minimized instead of just in the background. I'll try to not minimize it, and see if it still happens.
