Regular daily tournament schedule

Automatic daily tournaments are in place.

The current rotation is $1, $5, $10, $20, $50, $100, and $200 buy-ins that run sequentially every 3 hours all day long.  They rotate from day to day, so no time zone is favored.  Each one runs for 2 hours with a 1 hour break between tournaments.

Note that the tournament code has been fixed so that if you're the only player to join, you get refunded your entry fee at the end.  The same is true if no player scores enough profit to receive a prize---in that case, all players will get their entry fees ack.

Oh, and the very first one, auto_0, is scheduled to start in about 36 minutes.  Before that, the "Current" links above will show the last tournament that ran (test4).

I imagine those will be pretty empty early on, but I see no harm in having them as an option.

At least 7 could afford the $100 buy-in without risking their whole bankroll.

Beyond that, these entry fees are nothing compared to the poker world.  The "tiny" entry fee for a poker tournament is $50.

And the prizes would be huge at that level, so it's all relative.  Consider this potential prize pool for a 10-player tournament:

The first daily tournament was a $1 buy-in, with $0.05 stakes per game. Will all tournaments follow this same format of the stakes being 1/20 of the buy-in?

The tournament was not a big smash. Three people joined, and five games were played. The grand prize was $1.80. Hopefully we see more participation in the future.

Cool! So each tournament occurs every 14 hours, so there would be around one per day per stakes during busy hours.

Yeah, yikes, I see that the server is only refunding in the case where 1 person entered.

Even refunding when no games are played in the tournament isn't ideal either. What if I enter and sit around for the whole contest with no one to play with, meanwhile 2 (or 4 or 6 or 8...) other players join and play games against each other. Seems like entering a tournament in off peak hours is actually very risky with the current rules, it certainly puts me off entering them. The obvious solution is to refund your buyin if you don't get to play any games. Sure, for a "serious" tournament it would be your own fault if you buyin and then don't play any games, but if it's out of your control then it's not fair and a big deterrent.

Also, consider the case where 2 people enter the tournament and they play games back and forth for hours, and end up nearly even, but both with negative profit. No one wins a prize either.

I think these cases are quite likely to happen all the time since there are tournaments all day and most of them will have very few contestants.

Is it possible to run two tournaments at once? Of course only makes sense if the stakes are vastly different.

Is the time listed on the past tournaments list the start or the end time? (Column header maybe?) Would be nice if it gave the duration too.

Yeah, that tournament where no one had enough profit to get a prize is currently sitting in limbo with no prizes assigned.  I'll fix the code tomorrow to handle that, and the refunds will be given in the next flush after that.

In a case where 0 players win a prize, all players will get their entry fee back.  That's a simpler way to handle it than dealing with the one-player case specially.

In the case where you join a tournament and never get to play anyone, that is very unlikely, because the matchmaking is first-come first-serve.  So, if you sit there waiting for the 10-c game forever, the next tournament player to ask for a 10-c game WILL get paired with you.

I.e., as soon as the players get out from their last game and go to play again, you're next in line.

Now, if their game lasts the full 2 hours, okay, but again very unlikely.  If you join toward the very end, you risk not finding a game, of course.

Those times in the table are when the tournament record was last updated.  I think that happens after the last game is played.  Those tables aren't the best.

Also, there is currently no record of tournament duration (for the old ones, for example).  All the new auto ones are 2 hours each.

They are 2 hours each with a 1-hour break between, so they run every 3 hours.  Thus, they repeat every 21 hours, meaning that the cycle of 7 moves back by 1 slot every day.  Tomorrow, the $1 tournament will happen at 1pm PDT instead of 4pm PDT.

Oh, I didn't consider first-come first-served. Certainly lessens the problem, though it still means it's a bad idea to join a contest towards the end of the time slot. The other players may not stick around until the end. But since the tournaments are only 2 hours it won't happen as often as if they were longer.

I notice that if there's a tournament buy-in which you can't afford, then it's not marked as a tournament. It looks like a game.

Hmm... that's an interesting point about the CANNOT AFFORD thing.

I wonder if there's room there for CANNOT AFFORD $200.00 TOURNAMENT.  I'll check.

Okay, no room for that with the dollar amount, but room for CANNOT AFFORD TOURNAMENT.  This change is in place for v27.

There is a bit of an issue with tournaments in which only 2 players join. Basically the aim is to get more than 6 coins and then leave. Once you've done that you've won, and if only one other player joins at least you've guaranteed yourself second place if you'd don't play anymore.

Also currently you can win prizes when below $0? I thought you'd fixed that to stop players winning by joining at the last second? Also means that in a two player tournament you don't win much (but I guess you don't lose much either).

Ok, just figured out what happened. I didn't make the minimum amount to win but it's still decided to hand out prizes in order of winner to loser (just with no rake). So if I make a few more cents against I'll take the whole $18 prize pool.

Yeah, this is operating as it should, I think.

You can't just take 6 coins and leave.  The min profit for a prize is 20% of the tournament stake (so, 20 chips at least).  If no one has won a net of at least 20 chips, then "no one gets a prize," which triggers the "give everyone's entry fees back 100% rule."

Thus, I don't think there's ever a risk of joining a tournament with too few people or not enough action from your opponent.

You won $18 because you were the only player who won at least 10 cents.  The other player was below that threshold (in the negative) so they got no prize.  Thus, you got both prizes added together.

I left with a .075 profit after the first game and at that time on the leaderboard it put me ahead with $13.333 and JA on $6.66 so I don't think it is working as it is supposed to.

I guess it is now a situation where the first to 126 coins wins the contest if only two join (and they leave).

It would be nice if the tournament pages listed profit in coin instead of/in addition to dollars. Especially since the pages don't list any information like buy-in or per-game stakes.

Is it time to ask yet whether these regular tournaments are working? Perhaps they're too frequent to attract people. Also I've heard several people say they preferred longer ones, myself too.

I concur with .. . I like the idea of daily tournaments -- it's great to have the option on a daily basis, and it accommodates everyone's schedules, but it's not really a tournament if only two people join. The less frequent tournaments, announced in advance, brought in more people, and generated more excitement.

Yeah, I'm going to make some adjustments to this soon.  Probably one daily at a peak time, with a bigger one (larger fee) every weekend.

Just saw the new schedule, its really unfortunate for people in a similar timezone / workschedule situation as me. Im always at work during tournament hours except on my day off (Sunday, which is the highest entry fee) so I wont be able to play the lower tournaments where Im comfortable.

Yeah, this isn't settled... I just changed Sunday to $1 to be more democratic.  But I'm not sure what timezone you are in... maybe that's Monday morning for you...

Anyway, this isn't totally settled.  The rotating tournaments every 3 hours were clearly failing to achieve critical mass.  I'm trying the opposite approach by scheduling them in the peak time only.  We'll see what happens.

How about something like this, with little tournaments throughout the week, but then also running a week-long tournament once a month?
The thing with the little ones is not only does someone have to be available when it starts, but also for their entire short duration. With a longer tournament, availability matters less.
