Thoughts on v10 coloring changes?

Anyone have any feedback about the changes to the water color strokes in v10?  Does it give you the extra info at the end that you might want?  Is it confusing at all?

Re: Thoughts on v10 coloring changes?

Well first off, thanks for putting in this change. I see what you mean about the board being less dramatic, but it really is easier to read.

Honestly I haven't been able to put this information to use yet. A large number of games are folded before everything is revealed. And when everything does get revealed, I still can't remember the order I selected the columns in. I write it down sometimes, but I get discouraged because of how often the round ends early. Hopefully, I can train myself to read this stuff. For me at least, it's pretty difficult to pull off.

I like the new coloring, but I do definitely want to see what columns were picked even if the game ended in a fold.

This is my response, worded much better on wikipedia:

At any time during a betting round, if one player bets and no opponents choose to call (match) the bet and all opponents instead fold, the hand ends immediately, the bettor is awarded the pot, no cards are required to be shown, and the next hand begins. This is what makes bluffing possible. Bluffing is a primary feature of poker, one that distinguishes it from other vying games and from other games that make use of poker hand rankings.

Re: Thoughts on v10 coloring changes?

I wouldn't agree that that's necessary for bluffing, but it certainly does increase the effectiveness, and it's a big part of poker and cordial minuet. In fact if you look at the game mathematically if you played an infinite number of games against your opponent I suspect that not revealing cards only increases the length of time it takes to catch on, but not the amount of bluffing you should do.

Anyway, regarding the colouring, I haven't been playing too much since the new version and don't have much to say yet. It's a welcome change, though I definitely agree it's more cluttered, partially due to the asymmetry between rows and columns. But in addition to being able to see the numbers it takes time and practice to learn to make use of them, which I'll have to do. Most importantly, I have to try harder to remember the order in which the rows and columns were picked (or write it down).

I find that as I play more I actually tend to become lazier and make faster decisions with fewer considerations; wonder whether others are the same.

I think its decently easy to read the board now, but definitely could use some help in tracking column pick orders as well. I'd like to see some occult related markers on the top (for my picks) and the left (for their picks) indicating the order in some way.

Hmm... I think that some things can be left outside the game.  Tracking pick order is pretty advanced, and you would have time to quickly jot down the column/row symbols on a piece of paper.  I like the idea of a piece of paper on your desk accumulating an incomprehensible mass of Hebrew as you play.

Re: Thoughts on v10 coloring changes?

I heard about this game a while ago from one blog or another (probably Kotaku), and having just played against my first opponent, I have to say I really enjoy the mechanics of the game. I feel like it has the same skill/luck ratio as Magic: The Gathering (another game I play a whole bunch) does, and I think the playerbase of that game would probably love this one. I can't wait to get back in there and play a few more games this week.

Re: Thoughts on v10 coloring changes?

Totally thought I put this in another thread, but since its based on the watercolor changes...

I like that the board has a very "lived-in" feel to it. It makes the game feel more personal and homey. I don't know what was there before the watercolors, but since those help me see the scores on the board easily, I'm a fan of them. So... yeah. Nice work. Big fan, yada-yada. (No, I seriously am.)

It looked like this before:

http://www.gamasutra.com/view/news/2281 … Minuet.php

But that was before any kind of public release.  Watercolors have been in place for a long time now.  v10 made the black "mask" strokes less dark so that the board was still mostly-visible by the end (in v9, the black would accumulate so much that you couldn't read the ruled-out squares at all by the end).

Ah. Then that change definitely seems for the best, then.

Re: Thoughts on v10 coloring changes?

Well, it doesn't look as cool as a board completely smeared with black by the end, but...
