I demoed CM to a few people at IRDC two weeks ago. Jeff Lait remembered Jason specifically because they had both entered a competition at IndieCade (I guess they submitted "Fatherhood" and "Gravitation" respectively) and Jason won. Interesting story that one. I was trying to prod some people to gamble with me, but didn't want to push it too hard. I still would really love to play in person.
He may have gotten lucky. Hard to tell because it's not clear how many times he played each casino really. But like I said on HN, he didn't need luck. With the 20% loss protection, his per trip ROI was somewhere around 10%.
Hmm. I guess you saw my blog post then? I posted it in recently (again) in this thread (a fascinating read on it's own about a blackjack player robbing casinos blind).
Something about this game..... most comments are of the flavor "interesting, but I'll never play it." I don't know what can be done and I'm quite sad about the state of affairs. Jason held a HUGE launch contest and gave away tons of prizes including gold amulets and cash. There was some uptick in activity, but not as much as I expected. So yea, a contest is not the answer unfortunately. :\
I also saw that you posted in the twitter bot thread, so I will just respond here with: thanks!
I've said before that it would be better if entry fees and prizes were counted outside the normal profit leaderboards (that's my most reliable datasource), but obviously I'm biased here.
Even so, I'm not sure what happened here. Doesn't make much sense why you would have been given money in the first place, but oh well. A bug maybe?
Anyway, I manually fixed those two cases, so your graph should be back to normal. Can't say I will be able to continue to stay on top of that stuff, but it might have been a one off.
I am at a roguelike developer's conference, wooot, so don't think I will be able to make it. I do want to force people to play CM sometime this weekend though. I would kill for a face to face game.
Silly question, but you're not counting the entry fee against profits are you? The reason I ask is CD was suddenly hit with all these people losing exactly $1.
Also, huh?
The target game stake for matches in the tournament is 1 cent.
You will see this stake level highlighted in your client. Only games played for 10 cents count toward the tournament.
I like the 90s era website. Haven't seen image maps in a while.
I actually do think it's legit though. http://www.sfexaminer.com/sanfrancisco/ … id=2597312
Well, I've learned enough about Premiere that I could do the split screen pretty handily. Either 50% for each or the second board in a small preview on the upper right or something. It might be interesting to see how that turns out. Another way to do it is to alternate video/audio after each round.
My goal is still just to do a boring one sided video, but as experiments the above sounds really neat.
----------------------------------------------------
THINKING ABOUT IT SOME MORE
Actually, we might be able to get on skype and have a conversation recorded. Wouldn't that be neat? It'd be like hole-cam poker. We wouldn't be able to talk so much about strategy, but it might add an interesting bluffing aspect. Hell, it'd practically be like a whole new game here. I'd be AWFUL at it, but the idea sound irresistible.
Yea it was meant as a one sided thing, but if someone wants to record the other side then we can have both videos?
I've tried recording some games recently with the hope of turning the recordings into Let's Plays. I end up with content that I really don't like. The pick up games can end out of the blue and I don't get a good feel for my opponent. Also, it doesn't seem like my meanderings would be that interesting. A bit hard to talk about the game and think deeply about it at the same time.
Then I had an idea that might be more interesting to ya'll. Maybe?
I pre-arrange games with people on the forums. Then we get together and I record 30+ minutes of game time against that person. The games don't end early and we both know up front who we are playing. It's an opportunity to see someone analyzing your strategy and maybe an opportunity to peek at mine. When we get done, there's a nice video artifact. I could do this with multiple opponents.
I'm just feeling this out here. Does it sound interesting to anyone? I even have ideas about prizes and such, but I'll have to think more about that.
We play swiss rounds and there are participation prizes for everyone. That way nobody feels like they wasted their time and entry fee if they don't win....Also, there's no prize that can be offered besides money. In other games you can offer participation prizes like skins and whatnot.
Yeah, I don't think I could make it so that everyone got a prize.
It's not inconceivable that there could be non-monetary prizes. For a $5-$20 entry fee, you could offer all sorts of either digital or physical prizes for everyone and the top N players get the big cash prizes.
Physical:
-CM themed dice, red and green with the Hebrew characters on them
-Long shot, but a CM t-shirt if the entry fee was high enough?
-Stamped dollar bills (OK it's monetary, but cheap)
Digital:
-Permanent or temporary alias changes selectable by winners
-Participants get featured more prominently on a leaderboard in the game or on the main site (rather than buried in a thread somewhere)
-Flair/badges that are displayed to participants in game and/or to their opponents after a game concludes. It'd be really cool to have a unique badge that can never be acquired again. Perhaps I've jumped the shark here. Badge leaderboards?
I can see the allure here. If you're not one of the best players, a tournament seems like a good opportunity to simply waste $20. But if you are guaranteed at least some neat memento, it doesn't look like such a waste.
So I doubt the t-shirt thing would ever happen, but I bet I could make some cool shirts myself. I've done the bleach method and it looks pretty snazzy on a black shirt. This gives me lots of ideeeeassss
Sure. I'd guess $20 is the highest you can go and still get some sort of turn out. Based on the current dollar balances, I don't see $100 buy in being a good idea any time soon.
Hmm.... what's the market like for copper/silver amulets people? I think it'd be cool to have one. At the same time, will it remind me of my failure at this contest?
Thanks Josh! I tried one game of the new mode and felt totally lost without the score graph. It reminded me of how bad I am at poker. I'm just not as a good at this pattern matching thing.
Congrats to all the winners! This contest was something else. The setup was such that if you lost a single cabal match you might have to wait hours just for the chance to get back to where you were at. And so a single loss stung really bad; I couldn't stay level headed. I'm glad others managed. Anyway, I lost a gold by 2 points. I should have kept playing that day, but I was too scared to risk what I had!
Thanks Frosty. It was a great idea and I hope we hear from some of the people who joined in this way.
^ MUWAHAHAHAHAHAHA
Thanks, Frosty! Sounds like you've got a handle on it, but let me know if you need any help with the logistics.
Only 16 entrants so far. Kind of amazing how hard it is to give away free money....
Odd... it says there are 14 comments but I only see 7.
I responded to this person....
Looks good!
Btw, browsed your history. One more data point that EVERY SINGLE PERSON that plays CM is a programmer. LULZ.
Eh, isn't X in prizes a common thing in giveaways where it's implied that there are many prizes? Either way is fine. I doubt many people will avoid clicking because of the small amounts.
I have just a few tweaks, but they're suggestions.
Hello /r/RandomActsOfGaming. We would like to give away 50 accounts for Jason Rohrer's new game Cordial Minuet (Website-Link).
Each account comes with a starting deposit of $2 and can be used to win even more REAL MONEY and even REAL GOLD! (Link).
Can you really win lots of money in this game? YES YOU CAN! One player turned $2 into $500 (here's his recent profit graph (JA link)). Another player has won over $7,000 (link to Kotaku story).
How to enter:
Simply pick a number between 1 and 666. Yes, the game has a demonic theme.
The giveaway will last for 3 days. Each day around X:00 p.m. (UTC+1) winners will be chosen randomly.
Day 1: 10 winners
Day 2: 15 winners
Day 3: 25 winnersGood luck!
Oh you may also want to specify in the title or body that the game client itself is FREE. People might otherwise assume they first have to buy the game.
Ok thanks, Jason.
Frosty, because the outcome is essentially random, I think you might as well ask them to pick a random number 1-666. This seems pretty standard for RAoG anyway and it brings in the theme slightly (make sure to mention why of course). Maybe this is the best solution.
I'll contribute $60 and then we can say "$100 in Cordial Minuet credits (real money gambling)" which seems pretty enticing. I'm cool with 50 accounts at $2. You can briefly explain how one player (Jeopardy Alcohol) was able to turn their $2 into $500! That's gotta be exciting.
Maybe we can get a little twittering of the thread by Jason. Maybe.
