Not to be a jerk, because seriously I've lost money (in aggregate hundreds) and had wild fluctuations on Elo and it's always painful, but I have to say.... How the mighty have fallen!

JA has went from a high of I think $75 to $5. And over 300 Elo to 120. What happened? Maybe the playing field is improving? Definitely contradict's AnoHito's theory that "no one on this forum that would do well playing them."

Probably some of ya'll missed this article, which should provide some background: http://cordialminuet.com/incrementensem … php?id=112

Eh, Nate is just showing off. wink

He knows no one else has the balance to play it in the game.

#179 Re: Main Forum » How to Avoid Jeopardy Alcohol » 2015-01-21 14:46:41

I was playing JA last night a bit. They were doing the leave-as-soon-as-ahead thing. Yea, leaving at the right time is a skill, but it's also incredibly frustrating to play against.

It was really hard to tell what their picking strategy was. Often, it seemed like "one high number" but there was enough variation that it was hard to predict. Overall, I think their success comes from an aggressive betting game. There were definitely a lot of bluffs going on. The last game I played they raised 20 and then went all in on a bad hand.

It looks like JA had a rough night, dropping  to 3rd on Elo and losing $25. I'm sure they'll be back on top soon though. They're really good!

Interesting tidbit I've harvested over the past couple days (if this OK to share): Clock Form has played the most games and Jeopardy Alcohol the second most. Something like 180 and 75 games respectively the last time I checked and that's just in a few couple of days.

#180 Re: Main Forum » Cordial Minuet Twitter bot » 2015-01-21 03:19:32

Hmmm, I guess it's fine. Ignore what I said.

#181 Re: Main Forum » Cordial Minuet Twitter bot » 2015-01-20 23:56:53

Correct me if I'm wrong, but it looks like you're only updating the cache/resetting the timer when the page is viewed. I've checked a few times since you posted about the change and I usually get "Updated 0 seconds ago." Not that I'm pushing for this change or anything, but if your goal is to prevent checking and immediately getting results, that isn't being accomplished (at least when activity is low). It's compounded by there being multiple boards that can each give you a clue about who was playing (there should usually be at least one that hasn't seen a page view in 5 minutes).

#182 Re: Main Forum » Cordial Minuet Twitter bot » 2015-01-20 13:08:23

Well there's no way to know who you're currently playing. Not sure I follow.

Remember that the boards no longer change when you enter a game, right?

#183 Re: Main Forum » Cordial Minuet Twitter bot » 2015-01-19 14:28:10

Ah, ok. If the leaderboards cache for 5 minutes, that's perfect (hopefully I'd just hit it 1 minute after the refresh instead of 1 before). If the game gets significantly more popular, yea, most of the time you wouldn't get the P1 vs P2 aspect. Even if you can't sort out who played against each other, it's still really useful to see who is active.

.., glad you like it! It actually did go down last for quite a while last night. A locked cron job or something. I had the thing on for one day and it fails already... ugh. I really need to get some new hosting.

sjon03, that's possible but I hesitate to do that. Elo is already easily accessible. The goal with this bot was to highlight the temporal differences that otherwise go unnoticed.

#185 Re: Main Forum » Cordial Minuet Twitter bot » 2015-01-18 20:51:55

The bot is currently going to attempt to post everything. So even though it's only every 5 minutes, there should still a mention of every match. Sometimes it can condense them at the rate of ~2 matches per tweet though. As it stands, I view this as more a webpage you go to when you're playing rather than something you follow. I mean, if you want to follow it be my guest of course! smile

If there's enough interest, I could indeed make another one that only tweets high stakes matches. Then the question is: what's a "high stakes" match. $1? $5? There were about 20 games over the past day in which more than $1 changed hands (as opposed to 88 tweets in total).

Make a service that people can use to create a name-specific twitter bot that only spits out a stream for their name.  Then they can follow that twitter stream to hear only about their own games. Well, not sure if that's possible.  I bet the Twitter API doesn't allow a bot to create new twitter accounts.

I doubt it also (I had to do a phone verification this time to make a twitter "app").

But I did have a similar idea. You would @ the bot with a list of aliases you wanted to "follow" and the bot would henceforth reply back to you every time they had a match. That way you could keep track of your own account or any arbitrary account you are interested in without actually following the bot. Anyone up for that?

Hoping that the leaderboards don't get cached by the way... that would pretty much nip this thing in the bud.

Cordial Minuet is anonymized, but there's been a lot of talk lately about how to identify your opponents through the leaderboards. In one thread, AnoHito suggests (jokingly I hope) leaving games immediately in order to avoid a specific player.

I think the better solution here is a Twitter bot and I've written one: Canto Delirium

It scans the profit leaderboards every 5 minutes. If only two players have different profits from the last check, it can reasonably assume they played a game together. Otherwise, it just tells you the differences among many people and you can sort it out yourself. I might be able to make it faster than 5 minutes, but that already seems like a good balance between nuisance on the server and accuracy. I really like the way this gives you a more tangible record of your victories and defeats, something you can retweet or hand out as a link.

Let me know about bugs or requests. I have a few ideas for additional behavior. I'm recording all of the profit changes going forward, so maybe there'd be some way to query your recent profit history. Or maybe I'll just make the damn thing spit out random numbers 1-36, anagrams, or jokes (Chin Professor walks into a bar....).

#187 Re: Main Forum » How to Avoid Jeopardy Alcohol » 2015-01-17 14:11:22

Oh, so maybe that answers that question if someone is already doing it? smile I'd probably make some sort of stream of matches. For example:

$1 - JEOPARDY ALCOHOL vs. FORETHOUGHT TOBACCO - final score: $0.81, $1.15

The accuracy of this would depend on how often it checked (and how many pages back) because multiple games at the same stake ending around the same time could confuse it. Usually it'd be a good approximation I think. It would give AnoHito exactly what he's asking for (and many of us do this manually anyway). I refresh the boards all the time, not just to see who I could be playing, but to witness what's going down on among other players.

It'd be pretty cool to have had this for Doorman vs. Clemency.

Anyway, I've been itching to make another twitter bot and this might be perfect for that.

I think the idea of watching the scoreboards to avoid people is pretty uncool

Well for me it's more about knowing who I'm playing. Sometimes I'm looking for someone specific (like I've been trying to see when I play Jeopardy because I want to know what's that like). Or I want to make a mental note based on the strategy.

This kind of stuff somewhat goes against the inherent workings of the game, but based on what Jason has said before, he's cool with a lot of third party stuff. In TCD, it was a huge thing to find out what your name was (you weren't told by the game) and to discuss the neighborhood going ons with the community.

#188 Re: Main Forum » How to Avoid Jeopardy Alcohol » 2015-01-17 13:58:20

Yea.... I mean, don't you think it would be obnoxious if everyone followed this and everyone was leaving on the first round? Wouldn't it be easier and more reliable to just withdraw your money and uninstall?

I for one would really like to play Jeopardy Alcohol even though I'm sure they'll kick my ass. There's something to be learned there for sure!

This topic brings up an idea I've been pondering. Jason: are you against the idea of a scraper hitting the leaderboards?

#189 Re: Main Forum » Score preview before 3rd turn » 2015-01-17 03:32:01

I think that's what I'm suggesting here. If you do the same during the 3rd turn, I think you already get the resulting red scores.

edit: Nevermind. I was confused. I suppose that's another solution, but from a usability perspective it's a lot harder to mouse over 8 of those little tick marks as opposed to 8 tiles.

#190 Re: Main Forum » Score preview before 3rd turn » 2015-01-16 19:48:31

So you're really just looking for a one-sum math aid at that point?  My current score is 45.  Mouse over the 30-cell to help me see 45+30.

What can I say? I'm a knuckle dragger.

But no seriously, it's A LOT more than that. Previewing a cell not only does a flat add (45+30) but also cancels out a possible score for the opponent. Not only that, but you'd have to do all this math 8 times.

Because I clearly haven't made my case well, let me elaborate. The scoreboard you see during Turn 2 betting can be quite inaccurate in some cases because a rational player wouldn't choose some of those options. Here's an extreme example of the last 8 numbers on the game board.

 9 - 25
10 - 26
11 - 27
12 - 28

Let's say your current score is 45. The scoreboard is saying your final score might be 54, 55, 56, 57 ...or... 70, 71, 72, 73.

BS. This is a no brainer. You'll surely select the right column. Your scores shown during Turn 2 are misleading AND the opponent scores are wildly inflated (because you would never give them the 25-28).

This is one of the cases where not having the math done for you leads to a pretty significant advantage for people with 3rd party help and bots.

#191 Re: Main Forum » Leaving the table » 2015-01-16 17:01:19

1. As soon as the payout animation begins, you can leave and you won't pay the next ante.

2. I used to often play a table out completely, but now it's best to leave before the ante is roughly equal to the opponent's stack. Otherwise, you'll end up essentially going all-in before even seeing your first number.

#192 Re: Main Forum » Let's Play Cordial Minuet » 2015-01-16 14:41:24

I concur. Very cool, but you need a mic! I've thought about doing this. I've actually got some recorded video from the first tournament I might narrate.

Some notes on strategy in the 2nd round. You predict that they'll give you a 19, which turns out to be right. However, that wasn't the lowest row they could see, since it had a 32 (from your first column). Unless they knew for sure you had that column (which I suppose you indicated with your all-in), they can't be sure you won't get the 32.

Anyway, I think that's why all-ins on the first turn are ill-advised, like betting on a coin flip. Whatever small advantage you have in the first round can be easily wiped out in the next.

On the last turn, you decide what to do with the 36. I think you've put much emphasis on the high numbers. What's the difference between 34 and 36 anyway? Turns out it's 2. Not a big difference. Yet the left column you gave yourself in order to get the 36 had a 4 point lower average than the right column. And you would have won with the right column (well, hindsight ya know?).

Good video! We need more of this stuff.

#193 Re: Main Forum » Score preview before 3rd turn » 2015-01-16 13:53:25

Oh darn. I've been chewing on this for a while and never put 2 and 2 together.

I suppose that, if a cell is uncolored and unassigned by you yet, mousing over it could assume that you want to know what happens if it becomes green (and offer no way to test what happens if becomes red).

In lieu of letting you fiddle with sliders during betting, which would confuse the UI, this is the best approach.

IMHO, previewing the final red selections doesn't offer you much information. Each possibility gives 6 more possibilities for your opponent and plenty for yourself. On the other hand, previewing the number you'll get tells you exactly what your final score is.

Really simple, but important issue here. On the 3rd turn, you get to preview your final score depending of course on which row you will get.

The problem is you're not allowed to do that after the 2nd turn selections have been made. Betting immediately begins and highlighting your remaining choices appears to do nothing. There is no difference between the available board information at those two times.

This might seem minor, but actually the final score preview is often the most critical piece of information in the whole round. Sometimes you even see that you have a guaranteed win because any of your potential picks in a given column award you the highest score. But you currently can't access that information before 2nd turn betting.

#195 Re: Main Forum » No one playing more than $1 today? » 2015-01-15 13:44:20

It was pretty good! Hikaru no Go was one of only two animes I've ever watched (I just finished Code Geass after significant cajoling from a friend). I played it in college while attending a go club and it always kept me motivated. The thing I loved about it and why I posted that image is that it took a slow, quiet, and ostensibly boring game and cranked up the melodrama to the point where you might as well have been watching a mech battle.

#196 Re: Main Forum » New rising ante » 2015-01-15 04:22:52

Haha. I figured not. The only poker player you've mentioned having contact with is FRANK LANTZ. There's my wild conjecture. It could be anyone really.

#197 Re: Main Forum » New rising ante » 2015-01-15 03:59:31

Neat. Dramatic is definitely true. I wonder if this will encourage leavers though. Either way the games are going to end sooner rather than later.

Finally, it makes sense for the picking skill to start diminished (because you know nothing about this opponent) and grow over time.

Yea!! You could even set the initial ante to 0, since you should have absolutely no knowledge about the opponent when you make your first pick. Perhaps too boring.

The best players in this game so far include quite a few poker players (including the current Elo leader).

Hmmmm. I suppose you know this mystery player, since I don't think they have identified themselves here.

CUUUUULLLLLLMMMMAAAN!!!!

I'm due.

When shall we resume?

#200 Re: Main Forum » Another test tournament » 2015-01-13 21:56:11

Throwing this out there: what if each tournament had an Elo requirement to qualify?  Typical tourneys could be base cases with a 1 Elo requirement, but occasionally we'd have a higher minimum.

Say you need 100+ Elo to join. There's 24 provisional and 33 non-provisional players that currently meet this requirement. We'd get fewer people, but the competition would be fiercer. This would be more about skill and less of a focus on a large cash prize (you're probably already profiting more from regular play if you're really that good). Sounds like what you're aiming for, Josh, without any of the additional complexity. Less metagame.
