Re: The Tragedy of Judge Doorman

To be fair I let some friends play 50 cent games on my account xD.

But Judge is a lot better now.

Re: The Tragedy of Judge Doorman

Also, before I even played Judge, I would often lure people into a 5 dollar game after throwing a couple 1 dollar games. I used this tactic (and many others) to become #1 on the profit board before I even played Judge. This artificially lowers my elo but boosts my profitablity, which I did on purpose. This is the main reason that I think the elo system is wrong for the main game, but right for tournaments: it ignores the meta game of profit.

I'm not booing you or anything. Just rooting for Doorman at this point. He's the underdog, right?

What a hustler! big_smile

Re: The Tragedy of Judge Doorman

Well, we're not ignoring profit---that's why there's a profit leader board!

I don't think there's one right way to measure being "good" at this game, which is why there is more than one leader board.

So, has anyone played any games for $666 yet?

Forgot to reply to this:

Then someone else comes along and uses the same card to put in $50.  Should we allow that?  Yeah, we already have proof on file, but not for this other player.

It just seemed safer to block two people from using the same card.

Yeah, it would be nice to buy accounts as gifts for people.  There's also money-laundering concerns, though, so I can't support that explicitly on the server (I don't want to be regulated like a money service business, so I have to avoid direct transfers between players).

What if you put a withdrawal "floor" on gifted accounts? For example if an account containing $5 is gifted then you can't withdraw those $5, and if the recipient works up to $7 in total then they can only withdraw $2 (the $3 cheque fee can safely eat into the floor, kind of like a gift card for bank transfer fees : ). Also, maybe after each game you could set withdrawal floor := min(account, withdrawal floor).

Re: The Tragedy of Judge Doorman

I dunno.... I'm not sure that the complexity of gift accounts is worth it.

For the time being, assuming demand isn't too crazy, I'm willing to do this manually for people.  I can create an account with $0 in it for any email address, manually withdraw whatever you want from your account, and manually deposit it into the other account.

To really keep my nose clean here regarding money service business issues, let's limit it to $3 for now (so the recipient can't withdraw the funds).

I have decided to announce that I am going to donate $1,666.66 of my winnings to Jason Rohrer. He's an amazing artist and I truly wish him and his family the best.

What a guy!

Try Linux, get free. #!++ (CrunchbangPlusPlus) is a stable distribution based on Debian 8. Keep it fast, keep it pretty.

Re: The Tragedy of Judge Doorman

Wow.

Years ago, Jason used to have a little graph on his website tracking progress to receiving $10K of donations a year. I'm assuming that he's making more than that from his commercial games. On that topic, Nate, I always got the impression that it was hard (unreliable) to make enough to live on (or break even) on a single indie game, and people usually suggested aiming for a long-term strategy of building up continuing income from a bunch of games which don't need to be huge projects. Disclaimer: I'm not an indie game dev.

For the time being, assuming demand isn't too crazy, I'm willing to do this manually for people.

OK, cool. I wasn't begging for gifting, just putting out a suggestion.

Re: The Tragedy of Judge Doorman

Very nice, Nate! If you do the math, that's like the rake from 10s of thousands of dollars trading hands.

That makes me wonder about economics of CM as a product. To provide a decent annual return, people would collectively have to be gambling millions of dollars per year.

.., you can check out early numbers of The Castle Doctrine here.

Re: The Tragedy of Judge Doorman

Wow, that's very generous, and I definitely appreciate it!

However, I want you to be making an informed decision.

We made $140K from The Castle Doctrine (and other games) in 2014.  We made a bit more from TCD in 2013 as well, with the grand total somewhere up near $180K.

The TOTAL tribute received from all Cordial Minuet games so far is $683.4939.  Of course, I also paid out $420 in prize money for the first tournament.  Thus, the total income is only $263.49.

I've been actively working on Cordial Minuet since June 19, 2014.

Cordial Minuet is my 18th game.  I made 12 games that made nothing or close to nothing.  My 13th game brought in a few thousand dollars.  My 14th game brought in about $100K.  At that point, I had been making games for about 5 years, and trying to make a living from independent software for about 7 years.

As I understand it, you are working on your first game.  You may, in fact, need the money more than I do.

On the other hand, I'm 37, gazing at the prospect of game 19 with weary eyes, have three kids, and still cannot afford to buy a house in Davis.  Of course, none of those things are your problem!  smile
