On the bright side, there's no shortage of Cordial Minuet anagrams that could easily be used to reskin or re-theme the game. I mean, would you play Orca Unlimited? Maybe put a scallop in a graduation cap and call it Clam Erudition. Add some knock-off tetris music and some 8 bit background and you've got Comrade Uliti. The core game is solid, it's just a question of how much work should go into dressing it up in a cute wrapper.

#27 Re: Main Forum » Fundamental issues that limit critical mass » 2015-05-13 13:59:31

I've been thinking about a pay-once standalone version of CM as well.
Modified server rules could work something like this:

Everyone gets 500 play points (dollars?), and if at the end of the day your total is less than 500, your 500 starting points are returned to you. Or return 100 points every hour up to 500 if you want the game to be playable more often. There's no need for a rake, since the money isn't real, but unfortunately, this game doesn't "matter" as much. But it fixes the fundamental issue of "I paid $2 for this game, but I can't play it anymore because I ran out of money". Even Castle Doctrine let you keep playing after you died.

If you want to offer "dlc" you could say "Pay an extra dollar, add an extra hundred points to your daily maximum points" or something like that.

But would anyone play a pretend money game? I'm not sure. I think one of the big problems here is although the audience for indie games is large, and the audience for real money games is also large, I'm afraid the intersection between those two groups is small.

Edit:
This could still work in-theme with a reskin. Give the play-money players cute Hello Kitty/Lisa Frank style board choices or whatever, then if they want to play for real there's the occult version available at Cordialminuet.com

2nd Edit:
Heck, if we want to attract the f2p crowd, we could say "Everyone gets an account for free that refreshes to 50 coins every hour, 10 coins every 6 minutes", then pay a dollar, get an extra hundred added to your daily maximum. There are a ton of ways Jason could incentive people to pay for an increase in daily maximum, but I'm not sure that's a game design space that interests him. This way people can find out if they're good at this game before they invest any money.

I asked my gambling friend and he says most pros play overseas or follow the tournament circuit.

A solid case about match length and ante structure would be to look at JA's play strategy. In my experience, JA rarely plays past round 7, and almost never past round 10. I'm guessing it's to avoid rake along with avoiding risk

Has @mollikka interacted with @cantodelirium? That could give it away.

#31 Re: Main Forum » The Mystery of the Amulets » 2015-05-12 13:57:25

idunno anything about all that, but I think I found the hidden message about the time the God Of Destruction compelled Jason to do some terrible things to his wife after a marathon. I think he ran into a skunk while trying to escape. It went a bit like this:

a romance,
my last race.
I fight twins,
scold her, run,
fall, club
a cafe's EMS.
wow. Talc's

Have any of y'all skinned your game? I first tried something drastic by completely re-numbering the board, to have it go from -17 to 18, but that was a bit confusing having played so long with only positive numbers. I'm currently playing on a board with a color scheme that shows me the below average numbers and top 6 without re-numbering the whole board. I may play with some more drastic reskins later.

I wonder if there's a board where it's possible to get the highest score while also giving your opponent the lowest score? That seems like the next trick.

I'm pretty sure yes, with 36-35-34-1-2-3 along the diagonal (Sum is 111).

#35 Re: Main Forum » The Mystery of the Amulets » 2015-05-11 14:27:14

Hmm. Solving the mystery on the back might lead to the last amulet somehow. But it's a tough one, and given JA's secrecy, I don't think we'll ever get to see the back of #10.

As for what the backs look like... dots, circles, lines... maybe a triangle or two. big_smile

#36 Re: Main Forum » Reddit post about amulets » 2015-05-10 01:43:14

Ironically, I think this game could do quite well if it was setup at a casino. May need a bit of a reskinning or two, but it would fit right in.

#37 Re: Main Forum » Flipping the Sliders » 2015-05-09 07:13:50

You could try turning on colorblind mode to change the color of the sliders. I've started choosing columns by using the number keys, 1-6. First press selects your column, second selects opponent's. Enter bets, F folds. Maybe that will work for you?

Well, I posted this to the front page of MetaFilter, hopefully it's well-received there.

edit: ARrrgh, I said twelfth game when it's officially Jason's eleventh. Let's pretend I'm counting that one where you tear up money and I think the math works out.

#39 Re: Main Forum » Perfect Score » 2015-05-08 21:20:13

Wow, that's impressive. Late last night I managed to get a board ending with all picked numbers along the diagonal, with mine in the bottom left corner and my opponent's in the top right. I was rolling dice to choose my columns at the time, and the resulting board was chilling.

#40 Re: Main Forum » Running CM on the Raspberry Pi » 2015-05-08 16:52:33

I've altered the default window size in the setting folder of this game, but as far as I can tell it doesn't change the scale of the objects, just the size of the window border and blackspace.

#41 Re: Main Forum » Leaving: avoiding the next ante » 2015-05-08 14:44:46

It's my understanding that you avoid the next round's ante if you leave after your opponent's score has been revealed, but before the three "communicating" dots appear.

I think if you Fold then Leave you pay the ante of the next round? I'm not sure on this one.

If there was a new article or some blog post or journalist's impressions, I could probably work up a MetaFilter post based on that.

I feel the same about HN. Lots of abuse of the downvote and it's notoriously hard to get anything there off the front page (I submitted two Cordial Minuet articles on Tuesday).

Have you heard of MetaFilter? It's a much nicer place than reddit. I've only been to reddit a few times in passing, mostly for high profile AMAs. MetaFilter works differently, allowing everyone to post straight to the font page. Cordial Minuet and Jason's other recent games (Sleep is Death and Castle Doctrine) have been "on the blue" a few times. Jason even showed up in the comments of the post when it was in the news back in September.

Personally I don't feel like MetaFilter is the right venue for posting about the launch contest, so I haven't posted about it there. I just don't have much more to say than "Hey, the game launched", which usually isn't good quality discussion for that site, but as a replacement for redit, it's pretty good.

Edit Edit: Wikipedia says HN is HackerNews

Theoretically, with 12 amulets the choosing process could go on for up to 121 days.

No, supposing that one iteration happens per day (Jason sends out emails and everyone responds), the maximum is 11 days, because at least one amulet is awarded per iteration, and I assume there's no point asking about the other prizes (do you want $50 or $10?). That worst case happens if player 1 came first for all 12 amulets, player 2 came second for all 11 that player 1 didn't want, etc, all the way to player 12.

Sure, each day at least one amulet has to be awarded, but who that amulet ends up with is not set in stone. There is nothing stopping the person awarded the amulet from being given the choice of a different amulet later on, allowing them to put the other amulet back into the system. Overall, each person awarded an amulet on the first day theoretically can reject all but one of the amulets and each day could see only one amulet given up.
So the process can last for:
((Number of amulets - 1) * number of amulet winners on the first day) days
as you need at least one amulet passed on to the next day, the maximum number won on the first day is: (Number of amulets - 1)

And so the theoretical maximum number of days the process could last for is:
(Number of amulets - 1)^2

So for 12 amulets this is 11^2 = 121 days.

Here is an example with 4 amulets - labelled 1234 and four players labelled ABCD:

Ranking order of each amulet:
1:ABCD 2:ABCD 3:BCAD 4:CABD

Day 1 - A12: A chooses 1
Day 2 - B23: B chooses 2
Day 3 - C34: C chooses 3
Day 4 - A14: A chooses 4
Day 5 - B12: B chooses 1
Day 6 - C23: C chooses 2
Day 7 - A34: A chooses 3
Day 8 - B14: B chooses 4
Day 9 - C12: C chooses 1

(The second column shows the player with multiple amulets and which ones they hold)

So as you can see, with 4 amulets the choosing can last 9 days (4 - 1)^2.

This 121 day process lasts only 1 day if the first email sent out by Jason asks all potential winners their ranking order preferences.

Edit Note:
Only the top 12 players on any given amulet will have a potential to win, so if Player A is in the top 12 for only 3 amulets, that player only has to express preference for those three.

There's some simple optimization that can be done here to minimize emails sent as well, e.g., if player A is the second place player for amulet 2, and player A is in the top 12 for only one amulet, no player in the rankings for amulet 2 below player A will have to be notified of their preference, since A will take the amulet by default.

Edit Addendum Note:
Also, as mentioned before, we should consider the case in which a player prefers 2nd place gold to a Copper Amulet, since the cash prize in that case is higher.

What I really don't want is 4 "usual suspects" swamping the whole thing and making everyone else feel like they have no chance.

With the current leaderboards system, if there are 4 exceptional players, they will show up at the top of the leaderboards each day to fight for the amulet regardless of their eligibility to win the 2nd-4th prizes. Marking people with an asterix as having already won a prize would be imperfect, but better than nothing. As an outsider, I'd feel more encouraged to play/win if by day six half the leaderboard was visibly intelligible for a cash prize. Otherwise you're implementing an anti-usual suspects system that is invisible to the casual observer.

#49 Re: Main Forum » Feedback on final AMULET CONTEST PAGE » 2015-05-02 15:30:55

The current rules state not just one amulet per person, but also one Prize per person.

Splitting the second through fourth prizes like this is going to amplify the algorithm, especially considering second prize on day one is equal to fourth prize on day twelve. Running optimization on that would be much easier if you assume "Always choose the most money", but you still end up in some tricky situations where if I chose 4th day 12 instead of 2nd day 1, the prize distribution changes drastically.

Thoughts:

That last picture is really good, and gives a nice sense of how shiny they are. Great job polishing them!

I feel like the amulets need names, or at least pseudonyms. I'm not sure how transparent you want to be about what the demonic symbols represent.

The writing feels much more rough than the cordialminuet.com front and back page, and transitioning between somewhat cryptic language to explaining the contest seems like it could be done better.

I would eliminate contractions of the word "not", like you did (maybe unintentionally) on the current front and back page.

I'd suggest something along these lines after the "Read On" and before "AND THERE'S MORE", although admittedly I'm only imitating your style. I'm not sure you need a distinction between "Cabal coins" and "points", here's my attempt at combining them.

Over TWELVE days, ONE amulet will be won EACH DAY. The CABAL is rich, and you must feast on their wealth. Each coin of theirs you WIN will add to your coffers. But be warned! The GREED of the CABAL knows no bounds, and they will seek to reclaim their coins. Each net coin LOST will be taken away, till your coffers are BARREN. The day's amulet will become the prize of the GIFTED CHAMPION with the most CABAL COINS that day. Check on the LEADERBOARD to see if it is you who will WIN. Know this! The CABAL acts in secret, and they may strike at any moment. Do you know if you are being challenged by the CABAL? Here is the surprise you have been waiting for: YOU DO NOT.

If you have thought of a CLEVER TRICK to win more than one amulet, STOP RIGHT THERE, for it will not work. EXACTLY TWELVE WILL WIN AMULETS, although hundreds will TRY.

But will YOU try? Close your eyes for TEN SECONDS before answering: YES.
