Hey Jason, just wanted to remind you that the foyer still has the "Win Real Gold" link to the contest page on it... unless you're leaving it up for the mysterious 13th amulet!

I guess I'm not entirely sure what you're trying to solve. CM as it is may have some boards with bias, but the trade-off is a game that's simple and easy to learn. Boards that seem against you may actually be in your favor if you understand your opponent better than they understand you. At least, that's how I see it.

Thanks again for the contest, Jason!

#54 Re: Main Forum » v26 released (goodbye experimental game) » 2015-06-01 20:20:25

Maybe I'm misunderstanding (which is highly likely given this entire conversation), but if both players are playing on the same board, no transposition, and they're picking rows for their opponents, wouldn't it be possible for them to choose the same row for each other?

Ah! Ok, that makes sense then. I didn't realize that contest was awarded manually.

Yes, when that $6666 game is finally played, it should certainly be live streamed.

That game should probably be played face-to-face, live in front of a studio audience.

Aw man, I missed this one!

Question about this, though:

So.... Profit means profit from all sources (including amulet prizes, tournament prizes, etc.)

The $30 I won from the first amulet contest didn't count toward my profit, which jere mentioned before is how it usually works. So should it have counted? Sorry if I'm misunderstanding!

You guys are giving me ideas now... so I've already got it in my head that I want to do a local head-to-head party like Jason did at PAX. Well, it shouldn't be to hard to capture off of both machines, grab the player's audio, mix in the audio from a Skype commentator, and stream the result. So two people are playing locally, but then you've got you jere giving a play-by-play and talking strategy and such.

It sounds like a lot of effort, but I'd love to give it a shot sometime if there's interest.

That is the perfect starting point! Hm, and the file is even called amulet.jpg...

#61 Re: Main Forum » Play Creature Expression? » 2015-05-27 19:38:04

I'd be down to do this too. I'd be willing to record audio commentary and my side of the game as well.
Open Broadcaster is great for recording gameplay. It's meant for streaming, but you can also set it up to just record to a file. It's free.

I like the dice idea a lot! Also, I think the in-game badge would be cool too. It'd be like seeing the cabal member symbol pop up after a match.

But which magic squares should be used? There seem to be specific magic squares (not just dimension of square) associated with each planet, and I imagine no one knows how they were originally arrived at. Here's an extensive example:

But for sigils of demons and for other purposes, how should the magic square be chosen? There are all kinds of other properties they may have.

That website is a great find! I was only able to skim it right now, but I'll give it a more thorough read when I get a chance.

Choosing a CM magic square to use may seem impossible, but I think you might already know which one to try first...

Yes, it was too bad that $6000 article ran before the game launched.

We got close to as many active players that day as we did during the peak of the contest, and the game wasn't even open to the public yet.  In other words, that many people solved the anagram puzzle to get into the game after reading the $6000 Kotaku article!

Imagine if the game had actually been open to the public that day...

I'll admit that I was one of those. I read the first article on the game and told myself to try it out, but it wasn't until the $6000 article where I finally got myself to sit down and give it a shot. Although, the first Google search suggestion for CM is still "Cordial Minuet password" and someone in the comments on the article posted the anagram anyway, so I wouldn't kick yourself too much, since you could've probably considered it pretty close to public by that point!

If everyone got a prize and the prizes came from the entry fee pool, then everyone would just get their entry fee back...
It seems in the spirit of CM to pony up the entry fee with the risk of losing it for the reward of getting a huge prize based on your skill during the tournament.

One thing I'd like to put out there is that I really liked the first test contest we did with the amulets. Obviously we found out that the amulet points were exploitable, but I really liked having a multi-day tournament. It seemed like everyone was able to participate, I could play during normal hours and get my score to a point where I was ok going to work or going to sleep, and the first thing I'd do in the morning was check the leaderboard. I'm not sure if any of the other tourament structures would work over the course of a week, but I think it'd be enjoyable if they could.

#65 Re: Main Forum » NPR: Casinos Looking at Skilled-Based Gambling » 2015-05-27 07:10:37

I'm all for tournaments, as long as they're at a time where I can participate! $20 seems a little rich, at least at first. I wouldn't mind jumping in on a $5 buy-in, though.

However, I agree with dot dot. Lower stakes would be a good idea. Actually, it wouldn't hurt to run a small stakes buy-in tournament this weekend to keep the momentum going from the launch and include new players.

#66 Re: Main Forum » The Mystery of the Amulets » 2015-05-27 07:05:20

Ya, that was one of the better articles. I was really happy to find it! It's too bad really that it was posted after the contest had already ended.

This may be the subject of discussion for another thread, but to touch on the relative lack of media attention during the contest: what made me aware of the game originally was Kotaku. Unfortunately, I think Nate's story may have stolen the thunder of the launch contest. By the time of the contest, they'd already written two articles about CM. While "Win REAL GOLD!" is an awesome headline, it's definitely not as click-baity as "guy wins $6000 from a millionaire". This might be why Kotaku's "article" on the launch contest amounted to nothing more than a hand wave. From their perspective, they'd already covered the game and its more interesting story.

Anyway, back to ~THE MYSTERY OF THE AMULETS~

Nice article. Now I wonder what interesting patterns, sigils or otherwise, that one can derive from the magic squares. (Interactive webpage?)

I thought about this too while reading the article! I'm not sure quite how to figure out the order of the numbers since each pair is selected simultaneously, but after that it's a simple matter of converting the numbers to Hebrew and connecting the dots, right?

I'm wondering if they have the real money part in place in the AppStore version...  Looks like it.

I just skimmed through the current App Store spec. It looks like they do allow real-money gambling as long as it's legal in the territories where you're distributing the app, you have the proper licenses in place, and you don't use IAPs as a deposit method. Since CM isn't technically gambling (being skill-based), I imagine you could distribute it through the app store without worrying. It might be worth contacting someone at Apple to discuss, if that's even possible. I couldn't find anything that said if payouts can be done within the app or have to be done through a separate website.

Personally, I'd love to see an iOS version.

It has to be a CM-like game where the casino takes Jason's role. But will people really be interested? If they're already in the same room together in a casino, and they want to bet against each other. Why let the casino take a cut? Just bet with each other at a table in your hotel room. What is the casino providing that you're going to let them take your money? Jason is providing software and technology services.

The same could be said of poker, right?

Basically slot machines don't attract younger crowds, so casinos are looking in to offering skill-based gambling. Of course, I immediately thought of CM. big_smile

#75 Re: Main Forum » Out-there idea for a "better" game » 2015-05-21 05:08:50

I just played a single hand of the experimental mode.

I knew from the description of it that I just wasn't too interested in it, but I figured I'd give it a shot. Unfortunately, I really don't care for it. I'm having trouble "seeing" the shapes... like I literally got a bit of a headache trying to make sense of the board. It's a touch overwhelming and confusing. It seems to be lacking the elegant simplicity and strategy of vanilla CM. CM has a very "easy to learn, difficult to master" quality to it. This new mode just seems more like poker, which I know is what you were going for, but I just really don't care for poker.

I should say that I'm not writing this to be discouraging. If this is a mode people enjoy, then it should absolutely be explored and developed further. I may try it again in the future, but I don't feel as strongly about it as I do the regular game.

Ultimately I stand by your original vision. Vanilla CM is wonderful. It's a fantastic game. Strategy, simplicity, theme, community, everything. I think it already is the "better" game and doesn't need to be fixed. I love this community too. I actually really like the underground feel of the whole thing but I understand there's concern about the game's lifespan. I think this is the kind of game that requires some patience while is spreads. I have so many people I've talked to about it that are interested, but just need a bit of a push to try it out. The launch contest may have seemed like the push they needed, but I actually had some of them say the idea of being a beginner during a contest was intimidating.

I've mentioned before that I'm going to start livestreaming and planning parties around the game. Hopefully this will help, because I want this game to succeed.
