Yikes!  Thanks for noticing that.  Just fixed the lists.

#78 Re: Main Forum » Final Amulet Contest Winners » 2015-05-29 05:31:15

Oh man... entering 48 numbers.... I really should focus on other things.

All those numbers are still available on the leaderboards here:

http://cordialminuet.com/forgotTunedDisco.php

The very lowest number of cabal coins that led to someone winning a prize was 45.

#79 Re: Main Forum » Test tournament running right now » 2015-05-29 05:27:35

Whoops... Yeah, you're right, Amulet contest payouts do count as deposits (I do those manually, as deposits in the admin interface), so they don't count toward profit.

But tournament prizes DO count, because they are handled automatically by the server, so they go directly into your balance.  This makes some sense, because there is a buy-in, so you are paying attention to profitability of entering tournaments.

The amulet prizes are just gravy.  Since there is no entry fee, those prizes are kind of like an infinite return on investment.  Also, the amulet stuff was a one-time thing, so I didn't spend as much time integrating or automating the prize payments there.

Still, neither tournament prizes nor amulet prizes affect profit ratio, which is dollars won vs dollars risked in the regular game.

Sorry for the confusion here....  I implemented this stuff quite a long time ago.

#80 Re: Main Forum » Test tournament running right now » 2015-05-29 01:17:06

Okay, yes, it does affect the Profit leaderboard, since that is computed based on the raw balance (plus all withdrawals, minus all deposits).  Buying in lowers your profit, unless you win a prize later, just like buying into a $1 game lowers your profit if you don't leave later with $1.

HOWEVER, the prize you win does not count as a deposit, so counts the same as money won playing a regular game on the profit leaderboard (buyin lowers your balance, and thus your profit, and a prize raises your balance and profit).

HOWEVER 2:  the Profit Ratio leaderboard completely ignores tournament buy-ins and prizes.  This leaderboard tracks only profit relative to what you've risked in the main game (including buy-ins that were part of tournament matches... just not the entry fee or the prizes, which are outside the matches).

So.... Profit means profit from all sources (including amulet prizes, tournament prizes, etc.)

Profit Ratio means profit in matches relative to how much you risked in matches.

One tiny difference between a tournament buy-in and a match buy-in on the Profit leaderboard is that your CURRENT match buy-in is hidden until it's over (factored out of your profit) so you can't reload the leaderboard and find out who you are playing against right now (who's balance just went down by 66 cents?).  Tournament buy-ins are NOT hidden this way, which is why your twitter bot saw them all post right away.

Fixed that 10-cent thing.  That was a mistake in copying the text from the last tournament.

I'm looking into how the entry fees work into the leaderboard formulas...

A 3-hour tournament is running right now as a test.

The entry fee is $1.00

The entry fees go directly into the prize pool and are not used to fund your matches in the tournament.  Your tournament matches must be funded out of your remaining account balance after your entry fee is paid.

The target game stake for matches in the tournament is 1 cent.

You will see this stake level highlighted in your client.  Only games played for 1 cent count toward the tournament.  If you have entered the tournament, you will be blocked from accidentally joining 1-cent games with non-tournament players.  However, you can still play at other stake levels during the tournament---those games will not affect your tournament standing one way or the other.

The winners are determined according to who has the most net profit at 1-cent games against other tournament players by the deadline.  Play as many or as few games as you want during the tournament---it's profit that counts.

A leaderboard is here, along with a count-down:

http://cordialminuet.com/gameServer/ser … t_twins_30

If you want a preview of prizes for various numbers of players, look here, where the hypothetical prizes for a 20-player tournament are displayed:

http://cordialminuet.com/gameServer/ser … players=20

Prizes will be paid automatically into the winners' account balances within four minutes after the tournament deadline.

Note:

To prevent collusion between accounts, you will stop being partnered with another player after net profit of 2 cents or more has moved between you.  Thus, you cannot win by feeding off of one fish player or dummy account repeatedly.  If you are winning and losing back-and-forth against a given player, however, you can play an unlimited number of games until the net profit for one player from that pairing crosses the 2-cent mark.

Yes, colorblind mode is a clever way to handle this problem.  Great thinking, LiteS!

#85 Re: Main Forum » Pure Play » 2015-05-28 15:29:09

Not sure that you can patent a legal loophole...

The really funny thing is that there IS "consideration" in the form of the monthly membership fees that you have to pay in order to participate in the poker tournaments.

Of course, "no purchase necessary," so you can send in a postcard to play for free.  But doing that for each poker tournament you want to play in is pretty onerous.

I'm going to check it out and send in some postcards.  I'm pretty good at tournament poker...

Yes, when that $6666 game is finally played, it should certainly be live streamed.

Just discovered this:

http://player.pureplay.com/player/regis … cMini.html

Click the little "HOW IT WORKS" in yellow next to "and more!" on the main graphic.

How to Win Cash

PurePlay offers poker tournaments which award $100,000 per month in cash prizes. These tournaments are 100% free to enter. Basic members are given instant access to a limited number of these tournaments, and can enter the remaining tournaments by simply sending a postcard to PurePlay requesting free entry. VIP members have instant access to all cash tournaments and do not need to send postcards. See terms and conditions for details. Poker is currently the only game on PurePlay where you can win cash and other prizes of value.

Those are some loop-hole threading con artists there!  Send in post cards for free entry...

#88 Re: Main Forum » NPR: Casinos Looking at Skilled-Based Gambling » 2015-05-27 18:56:53

Well, there's the problem of labor on my end.  Gathering 20 addresses and mailing stuff out for each tournament.  The cash prizes are automatic.

I dunno about badges or other things...

I think that the tournament structure could work as-is, and it's actually more attractive to both pros and fish than the main, one-on-one game.  It turns it more into a table game, where the prize you stand to win is way more than just 2x what you are risking.

#89 Re: Main Forum » NPR: Casinos Looking at Skilled-Based Gambling » 2015-05-27 17:04:12

Yeah, I think the "standard" tournament where max profit against other tournament players could work over a longer period.  Like 2 days or whatever.

I'll start with some shorter ones, though.

#90 Re: Main Forum » The Mystery of the Amulets » 2015-05-27 14:57:33

Yes, it was too bad that $6000 article ran before the game launched.

We got close to as many active players that day as we did during the peak of the contest, and the game wasn't even open to the public yet.  In other words, that many people solved the anagram puzzle to get into the game after reading the $6000 Kotaku article!

Imagine if the game had actually been open to the public that day...

#91 Re: Main Forum » NPR: Casinos Looking at Skilled-Based Gambling » 2015-05-27 14:52:29

Yeah, I don't think I could make it so that everyone got a prize.  I mean, with an entry fee of $5, if 20 players enter, the entire prize pool is only $100.  If we're going to give some players a bigger prize, that means others would walk away with a prize less than their entry fee.  Thus, it would operate like a poker tournament, with the top N players getting bigger prizes, and the bottom M players getting $0.

Example of a $5 tournament:

#92 Re: Main Forum » NPR: Casinos Looking at Skilled-Based Gambling » 2015-05-26 18:46:18

Would anyone be interested in a tournament with a $20 or higher buy in?  Prizes would be large, of course.

I've also thought about running a $100 buy-in tournament at some point.

#94 Re: Main Forum » Out-there idea for a "better" game » 2015-05-26 14:54:14

Actually, I wonder if the opposite isn't true.  It seems like the interest in live poker is partly fueled by the lack of opportunity (in the US) to play online.

Yes, it was exciting and interesting to interact with all of these characters in person, but it is very slow in terms of gameplay (fold fold fold fold), and would become quite a grind over time.

Online, you can play 4 (or more) tables at a time.  You're still fold-fold-fold-fold at every table, but there's some playable hand 4x as frequently, and if you play with the same skill, you make 4x the money per hour.

The internet kids had their livelihoods devastated when Black Friday happened and they had to revert to going into poker rooms and playing one table at a time.

Well, I wasn't thinking people would mount these on necklaces as jewelery.  The copper and silver ones especially are pretty big for that, though I suppose it depends on how hairy your chest is.

You could put a cord on it and carry it in your pocket.  You could then reach in and feel it throughout the day.

The copper and silver ones will tarnish, but that will add to their specialness.

#96 Re: Main Forum » NPR: Casinos Looking at Skilled-Based Gambling » 2015-05-26 14:41:46

Well, it does work... it's just way slower.  It also dissuades people from playing higher stakes.

In Poker rooms, the minimum buy-in (to have a full stack) is $300.  Each chip is $1.  But you can sit there for hours with that and play hundreds of hands against eight other opponents.  Your stack goes up and down, but you can bide your time and wait to get into hands with the fish.

Here, if you buy in for $300 and land with a pro of the same skill, there's a 50% chance you will lose the entire $300 (well, unless you smell the pro and get out before losing too much).  You can't sit there for a while and read the whole opponent pool and look for your opening.

Finally, one more big problem that has only been tangentially addressed in the past.  Even if you beat the pro (or the fish) in CM, your risk is rewarded by turning your $300 into at most $600.  That's great, but compare it to Poker.

If you sweep a 9-person table, you can turn your $300 into  $2700.  Add in the fact that the fish (and sometimes the pros) run out of chips and re-buy (pulling more $100 bills out and calling for the chip runner to bring them more chips), and you stand to get way more than that.

In Vegas, there was a time when I had $1000+ sitting in front of me at the $300 table.

I always wondered why heads-up poker (2-player) wasn't more popular, given that it's more interesting (you must play way more hands and fold way less) and deeper (the difference between a good hand and a bad one is more subtle, and it's all about reading your opponent well).  Yeah, it's not economically feasible in a poker room (a dealer paid for each pair of players?).  But online, it's offered, but never popular.  The above reasons help to explain it.

Also, note that "never popular" is based on my own subjective wait times for an opponent online at 2-person tables.  Of course, the parity problem is still there, so my wait time may have nothing to do with how popular it actually is.

#97 Re: Main Forum » NPR: Casinos Looking at Skilled-Based Gambling » 2015-05-26 05:14:02

With Poker, the casino (or card room) is a draw BECAUSE there are lots of people coming together to play there.  Pros need lots of fish, and casinos attract them.  One or two fish can feed a table full of pros, so it works well and stays balanced.
